okay im looking for a half stack.

i would play it with a schecter c1 hellraiser, and i also have a wylde overdrive pedal, and a boss ds1.

i mostly play hard, hard rock, and older metal and classic rock(metallica, gnr, acdc). but i also play some lighter and heavier stuff, so it has to be atleast average sounding as an all around amp.
volume isnt a major concern either, it would mostly be used in garage band type projects, and some occasional small shows.

i dont use many effects really, but its nice having them.

600 is my limit, but i want the best quality, value, and reliability possible.

here are three i'm thinking about, based on reviews and sound clips and what not.
ill be hitting the music stores this weekend to actually play around.

any suggestions..?

Crate FlexWave Series FW120HS 120W 4x12 Half Stack $500

Marshall MG100HDFX/MG412 Slant Cab Half Stack Package $600

Randall RX120DHS 120W Half Stack Guitar Amp with 4x12 Cabinet $600

All of those amps suck, and would sound pretty terrible with EMGs.

You don't need a half stack.

Get a tube combo.

I'll tell you the first initial replied you are going to get, so expect them, because they're true:

You do NOT need a halfstack, least of all with your little budget.
Get a valve combo, which doesn't give you a penis extension granted, but it will sound infinitely better than those crapstacks you posted.

Get a tube combo, you cant get a decent tube halfstack for your budget. Those amps you listed are pretty bad, especially the Marshall mg100, I know this from experience, I owned one for over a year.

OK, I've had just about enough of this crap. Next idiot who starts another thread asking for a $500 SS half stack is getting his email address added to every porn spam list I can think of.

I pity the fool who wants a solid stat stack.

Damn, Dimebag was a fool wasn't he?

Vetta's, Randall RGs, and a couple others are excellent solid states, just not in TS's price range.

I would NOT recommend a Palomino though. They don't have a lot of drive and will not work for metal at all, plus they are made in Vietnam. For $600, look into a used JCM900 or JCM800 combo.

On a side note, don't buy a stack unless you have about $1200 to invest in a good one or have a lead on a good cab for cheap.

Dimebag had terrible tone.
Someones knowledge of guitar companies spelling determines what amps you can own. Really smart people can own things like Framus because they sound like they might be spelled with a "y" but they aren't.

Dimebad is one of my absolute favorite guitarists, but yeah, I never really liked his tone either.

I have to agree with your post. Except for the Dimebag part - yes that man could play the guitar, but his tone is nothing to brag about.

i think i'm gonna be the first one to actually try to help this guy with what he wants :
the Peavey Windsor should give you the tones you want, and has good tone.
it should be within your budget aswell.
#16
yeah all of those amps suck, if you really want a halfstack look in pawn shops for off brand tube amps from the 60's/70's I got a 120 watt tube head with a 6x12 for $350 and it sounds great.

Get a nice tube combo like the rest said. Half stacks suck if they are solid state. I've got the 65W version of the Crate and I know it would suck even more as a stack, plus the other is an MG and the Randall is SS too.
#18
The point I was trying to make with Dimebag is that his Randall RG's were pretty well liked amps, and his tone worked great in a band setting

A lot of those amps are tonal duds. You have to really know what you are buying or you can get taken very easily.

To say a Windsor would do Metallica is pushing it, though a good OD may do it.

Maybe.

Everyone is right. You don't need a stack unless you're touring with a band and playing live shows in front of packed arenas....which you're not doing!

As for an amp, I have no idea!

You could probably find a used Peavey Windsor for that much used. Hell the heads go for around $250 on ebay and you could easily find a cab for that on CL and have some leftover cash. Or just go for a tube combo.

Lol if you are touring and playing in arenas you probably have enough money to buy a good half-stack.

Playing metal music you don't have as many options as most other people who aren't into the high gain stuff. There aren't that many tube amps in that price range that you'll probably be satisfied with. If you go solid state you do need a half stack because solid states start sounding muddy when turned up and a high wattage half stack gives you more room to turn up. Line 6 head and a behringer cab seems like the best option to me... 150 watts. I used one before I had my 6505 tube amp and although its not as loud as my tube amp it could get really loud.. enough to drown the drummer out and still sounded decent. Despite what people say. i'd say if you are a beginner theres nothing wrong with going with it.
#28
under 700-800€(1000bucks or something) there's no way to get a good tube half stack...solid state half stacks just suck...well...atleast 999/1000 of them xD

Used Peavey XXX. Windsor definitely. Peavey Valveking head would eat your budget, but then you could match it with some decent speakers.
There's a lot more acceptable amps in combos and the used market than buying new.

You will get none of the above things from a $600 half stack, you'd be better off with a Traynor YCV40 or a Peavey Classic 30.
