im gonna sound like a noob but what are studio monitors for and would i need them and which ones would be a good choice

Studio monitors are basically speakers that don't color your music. Use them in a recording studio for playback mixing and production.

If you have a recording studio, or planning home recording then yes, you may need them.

Monitors are a very important part of your recording process. The song will only sound as good as the weakest link in gear. Try to get a pair for about 300 if you want a decent "noob" pair.

actually if you pick up decent computer speakers, they will work as monitors, most likely you dont have a sweet recording set-up since you're asking this question. i would just go pick up a standard altec lansing set-up for like 100 bux.......2 speakers and a sub, keep everything in the middle as far as treble and bass go and you'll be all set.

***EDIT*** thats what i use for my monitors, check out my song on my profile and see if you think it's mixed properly

No. Computer speakers are NOT studio monitors. If you want a good mix, invest in some low end powered monitors.

I have a set of Wharfedale monitors that cost £150 which I think are pretty good for the price.

If you really don't have the cash, you can definitely use normal computer speakers, but it's really not advisable.

Honestly, if you couldn't afford monitors I would go with the best set of studio cans you can afford. Something like the Sennhieser HD280's. You want something that doesn't color your sound....
