EDIT: if you have a solid state amp and you use an OD pedal you get more of a tube-esque sound. Don't quote me on this, but that's what it seems like to me.
I think the DS-1 is worse because it gives you very little actual boost (imo) while the SD-1 gives you a massive charge.
