If you have a crap amp then the pedal won't help much.

I heard the Rocktron dragon was rather hissy, and not as tube as you'd hope.
I was going to get one until I heard that.

my amp blows and i was just looking for a nice pedal to make it sound better after i get a nicer amp so i can get a good sound and not get kicked out of my house
i like the silver dragon because you can blend solid state with tube sound but it has no eq

You're not going to get a true tube sound without getting a tube amp. What amp do you have, you say it blows, but what is it?

Modded Boss DS-1s are supposedly make nice distortion pedals. I'll have to get back to you on it though (trying one this weekend). Metal Muffs are rather fizzy, like the Metal Zone they are based on. If you want high gain, try an AXT Extreme III.
