so a couple buddies of mine were wrestlin around at my place and tripped and got tangled up in my stand with my Martin D-15 falling flat on it crushing it practically flat. my heart split in half.

so what i need help with is if anybody had any recommendations on finding the best deal for the best sounding acoustic. I probably have a budg of about 100-150 but i just need something i can jam the hell outta that sounds good. I play a lotta Jazz/funk/barre chord stuff so anything with low action would be preferred. thanks

I think a little bit of my soul just died.

i dont think anything in the 100-150 range is anywhere near sounding "good" compared to that D-15. not at this low of a price anyway. I dont think you can really get anything worth buying at this range. I could be wrong though.

Man I feel sad after that, and it wasnt my guitar.

If you have another uitar I would just save your money and get something as good as our Martin

Make your friends buy you a new D-15, they broke it they bought it, HAVEN'T YOU EVER SEEN RUGRATS?!

Also, keep any further guitars in the case when you're not playing it or have people over.
#8
Your friends should definitely buy you a new D-15--otherwise they're total assholes.
#9
oh my lord. That's pretty terrible. I'd definitely ask your 'friends' to at least help chip in for a new one, if not buy it for you. And next time do not let animals and small children near your guitar. See if it's covered for accidental breakage under your home and contents insurance too.
#10
Charge them half each for a new D-15. Seriously, I'm angry for you here. <_<

Wow. #1: Kill them in their sleep with something sharp.

A guitar for $150 that plays well? No. Double that amount and you can get a serviceable axe. Check the FAQ thread here on the acoustic board for 10 guitars under $300 that sound great. I've played most of them, including the Alvarez and the Seagull, and they are the best bang for your buck.

darn right! if someone broke my guitar from their own stupidity i would bodyslam them through the floor.
but i hope that wasnt your only guitar man, because 150 wouldnt even get a good electric.
#16
That's the saddest thing I've heard all day. =(
Well, I have a yamaha, and I've had it for about 3 years now. Probably in your price range, but I like it a lot. It's served me well for a while. =)

Although if it was my first choice...if I was to go out and buy a new acoustic, I wouldn't get anything similar to it again. xP
#17
A used Dean Tradition 1 is around that price. I love mine. Nice tone, and a soft V neck.

this cannot be a real thread. anyone with a dead martin cannot recover. Use a case next time my friend at ALL times.

How much is a Taylor Big Baby in America? Failing that, Tanglewood had some award winning guitars kicking about in your price range in recent years.

That's bad form from your friends!
#21
Do you have pictures? Have your friends AT LEAST chip in something. c'mon, that's a ****in $800 guitar! And a good one at that.
#23
Sorry guys my comp died so i couldnt reply back. Soooooo i can't charge my friends just cause theyre broker than i am, and it truly was a freak accident, although i will definitely accept any donations they can muster to pool up. I'm gonna post some pictures tomorrow so all can witness this disturbing travesty and maybe pay some respects to an old friend that has treated me well for 3+ years. Anything i can possibly salvage and or create out of a busted guitar, i dunno?

the reason i ask about any recommendations for any cheap guitars is because i bought an ex-girlfriend an ibanaez for $75 a couple years back on craigslist and i got the action lowered and adjusted for another $75 and it sounded awesome for such a low price. course nothing like a martin but im broke and need something to strum on before i go through withdrawals.

thanks guys for the posts and ill post some pics tomorrow.

The Little Martin is a joke of the Martin line. Any low-end Martin guitar is worthless. I'd get a Yamaha over one of those any day.
Sincerely, Chad.

i hate yamaha, but i'd still probably buy a low end yamaha if i had to. good quality. the easiest acoustic guitars i've ever played are all yamahas.
#27
Chances are small you can find a decent acoustic for that price. Up it to 200 and you will have some better starter guitars to chose from. Just go to a store and try some.
#28
I would try and borrow something in the meantime or make your friends fork up some cash to help you get something nicer. I have an alvarez FD60 that I got at musicians friend for 340$ and love it. It has a great sound and is much nicer than a 300$ guitar. I have played an Alvarez RD8 and they are pretty nice. I would just make sure to play it before you get one as they all sound different. The RD8 and RD20 are both under 250$ if you get the standard acoustic and not accoustic electric.

first do this-kick ur friends in the throat. second go and but an Ibanez V. make sure u get the one with the solid top...sounds much better then the regular one...$150
#31
Ergh...
Do yourself a favour and stay away from Low end martins and Taylors (like the baby Taylor). Your paying mostly for the name on the headstock.

As for Ibanez and Dean acoustic guitars.. no. Just no. Deans just look fancy and generally sound crap.
Ibanez's, similar deal, slightly better than Dean IMO. But still, they generally do not represent good value for money and there are waaay too many quality control issues. I mean I've heard something bad about pretty much every brand of guitar I care to think of but Ibanez have consistent issues with quality.
Most common problems I hear about are the electronics not working out of the factory or there being so much fret buzz that they are un playable.

Stick to the Yamahas in this price range.

I actually lol'ed.

$150 will get you a used Yamaha FG700s or Washburn D10s off Ebay or Craigslist

Thats probably what id be doing.

Crafter might be a good deal, if you can find one nearby. (And I'm talking dreads and grand auditorium-sized ones, not the SA series or their "non-traditional" shapes.)

If you want a guitar that's got the same bassy UMPH as a Martin D15, I'd recommend a Yamaha FG750s, it is over your price range though.

The FG750S is a great guitar(I own it), but the Martin is noticeably bassier, in my opinion. I don't think it's a fair comparison at all, actually.

First of all turn the damage in to your house/apartment insurance company. You'll get the actual cash value or replacement value whichever was purchased minus the deductible. Make your idiot friends pay the deductible. They broke it and they owe it.

Now if your looking for a decent guitar look at Blueridge Guitars. I've seen the BR-160 as low as $599 on the net and sometimes lower on e-bay. It's a copy of the prewar Martin HD-28. Gets Great reviews. Or the Blueridge BR140. Should be able to get one of those around $500 used. It's comparable to the pre-war D-18. Great sounding guitars for not a lot of money.

a big baby is like 400-600 bucks, my friend has one, its an awesome guitar, u cant go wrong with it
#39
Wow... Dude, that seriously mad me sad, if my friends broke one of my guitars, especially my acoustic, (happens to be my first guitar, never selling it) I would seriously cry, right there on the spot...

Man, I know it's gonna be awkward but I would ask them to front you some money, I mean 75-100 $ a piece, then you can get an Alvarex D-20 I believe is what it's called, check teh under 300 thread (happens to be my aforementioned guitars, I love it, I've played multiple acoustics but the feel of that guitar keeps bringing me back..)

Geez this thread really hit at home with me, I'm definitely going to be more careful with my guitars from now on, I'm sorry that this happened to anyone... I don't even know you and I really feel bad for you dude :/
#40
lol yea. i'm getting a martin d-16 most likely. i'm definitely babying that guitar. the only time i'll let anyone touch it is...
1. the first time they ask to try it
2. their birthday

the only exceptions are my brother and my best friend who i've known since i was born. my brother will be using my art & lutherie more often than my martin, and my best friend doesn't obsess over guitars, so he'll play it, but not that often, LOL.
