So yeah, exactly.

There's a MIM Standard Strat sitting in a local pawn shop, going for $300.

Now, I currently have an Epi Dot Studio. Good guitar, but I don't truly feel it suits me. I was considering putting in some humbucker-size P-90s eventually, but then the issue of this Strat came up....

So, UG, I must straight-up ask your opinion.

Do I trade in the Dot (plus hard case in mint condition) for the Strat?

Or do I keep the Dot, and gradually upgrade the electronics?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

what do you play genre wise?

I would go for the strat myself, but i would much prefer a standard Epi Dot

Id pick strat over dot.

You could get $1000 custom made pickups hand wired with Eric Johnsons pubic hair, and they'd still sound pretty bad through a ****ty solid state practice amp.

Really? I thought Frontmans where highly respected around here?!

Oh, right, genres.....

Um, well, classic rock mainly. Experimental, psychedelic, progressive, whatever you want to call those odd ones.

If it helps, my only distortion units are a Fuzz Face clone and the overdrive from the Valve Jr., and I like it that way. Also commonly use a delay and chorus pedal.

Personally, i much prefer humbuckers for distortion, but the strat has some great cleans and will get you that psychedelic tone you want better than the dot will.

if you want psychedelic i guess go with the strat
personally id choose the dot, but my style is much different

The Strat's a bit more versatile simply because it's a solid-body. I'd personally choose it over a Dot.

MiM strats are great for the money IMO... i think you'll get a bit more versatility out of it than the DOT

Well, doing some more thinking, a lot of my inspirations have used Strats....Gilmour, Harrison, Knopfler, (Jeff) Beck.....definitely need to take a closer look, if it's even still there....

Just gotta convince the father to let me trade it....
