So, as some of you may know, I semi-recently picked up a '73 Fender Twin Reverb from a crazy guy in a barn. One of those lovely Craigslist finds. A half an hour drive and $400 in cash later, I was sitting on the thing. I took it straight to band practice, since I was in that direction, and got to futz with it at high volume for a few hours. Bliss.

After getting it back to my shop, (tiny dorm room) I proceded to give it a closer look. One of the 4 6L6GC's was dim, and the phase inverter 12AT7 wasn't lighting up. Also, there was a bit too much buzz to be natural, so I called on Roc (Colin, from the Tube Thread) for some help. He advised new filter caps and tubes, so off I went. A week later, I had a new set of Illinois filter caps, a generic Chinese 12AT7 phase inverter, and 2 matched Sovtek 6L6WXT+'s. I went to work, pulling out the tubes and removing the chassis to replace the filter caps, and decided to take a few pics for you all.

So here she is, my Twin Reverb bearing it all!

Once it was all done, I thought I'd stand up a few of my pretty Fender whatsits. Anyone see my bias? Cheers everyone!

Wow, nice!

Like that silverface instead of the regular old blackface controls.

How does it sound? Have you compared it to a newer Twin? Did you get any break-up at those higher volumes?

I used to have a Twin Reverb...I kind of miss it .

Yes it is. Mine is actually the model they buint in Japan for the Japanese market. The more common one with no pickguard was built in Japan for the American market. No idea how it got accross the Pacific, though.

Cool.

Does it have a three-prong cord? Is the internal pot hum balance or bias?

EDIT: Could you measure how high the transformers are? They look like they're the same size as my Bassman's (50W).

It does have a three-prong cord. I'm not entirely sure, but I'll check the schemtic after class. The Transformers come in at just about 2".

Cheers to everyone for your kinds words!

Wow! I knew the Bassman had oversized transformers, but not that they were bigger than the Twin's... They're both 3".

I could be wrong; I'll take a better measurement after class. I might have measured the wrong dimension, too. But isn't your Bassman a mid-60's model? I could see Fender using a different size of transformer 10 years later.

Sweet amp man.

I have a 76' with the master volume push pull knob. It needs to be recapped...it's crapped out right now. I got mine for $150 though!

I recommend you replace the cathode bypass caps as well (the white electrolytics). They are also way past their 'best before' date. You could keep using them, seeing as they won't damage anything when they fail (besides shooting nasty crap in all directions), but putting some fresh ones in will improve the sound, and the reliability.

I gather you mean the 3 white caps in the 4th pic from the top?

Dang, MESA, I thought I had a good deal!

Boring caps don't exist.
