'The Pit' Rules

In order to keep this forum relatively clean and pleasant to use for staff and regular users alike, here is a list of rules that we expect all UG members to follow. Punishments including warnings and bans will be given to those members who break any of these rules.

***DISCLAIMER***
All warnings and bans are at the mods' discretion - to put it simply: if we don't like it, you can be punished for it, regardless of whether there's a specific rule against that specific offence in our current list of rules. We also reserve the right to close or delete any posts/threads at our discretion. Any punishments listed are the most common punishment given for that offence - other punishments may be given at the mods' discretion. The rules can and will be updated at any time, and any new rules are effective immediately.

*** MAIN RULES ***

NO PORNOGRAPHY
- On UG, pornography is defined as any nudity showing any portion of the genitals of a male or female, or any portion of nipple on a female breast.
- You may not post a pornographic image anywhere on UG, or link to a website containing pornographic images.
- A person who quotes an image/link containing pornography is treated the same as the original poster.
Punishment: Instant Ban.

NO RACIST/VULGAR/GORE IMAGES OR CONTENT
- You may not post any extremely graphic or violent imagery, links to sites containing such imagery, or express any racist or hateful sentiments anywhere on UG.
- What is deemed appropriate or not is decided by the moderators. Use your common sense or ask a mod before posting if you are unsure.
Punishment: Posting any extremely graphic or violent imagery will result in an instant Ban. Hateful/vulgar comments may receive a warning or ban.

NO MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS
- Each person is only allowed to have one account on UG.
- If you have made a multiple account, PM a moderator ASAP and they will ban it for you and allow you to continue using your original account. If we find it ourselves, you will be punished as normal.
- If you are aware that a sibling living in the same house as you has a UG account or is planning on making one, PM a moderator with their account name and you will not be punished. If we find their account ourselves, we will assume it is a multiple account and you will be punished as normal.
Punishment: New account receives a Permanent Ban. Original account receives a Ban.

NO SPAM
- This means no meaningless posts, overdone threads or random gibberish.
- If the opening post of a thread is spam, then that thread will be considered a 'spam thread'. Any posts made in a spam thread (other than to notify everyone that the thread has been reported) will be considered spam, regardless of the content of the posts.
- What is deemed appropriate or not is decided by the moderators. Use your common sense or ask a mod before posting if you are unsure.
Punishment: Decided by the moderator. Your thread may be closed, and you may receive a warning or ban.

NO FLAMING
- Be nice to each other. We will not tolerate excessive name calling or hateful comments directed towards other users, bands, moderators or anyone else.
Punishment: Decided by the moderator. This may include a warning or ban.

NO ADVERTISING
- You may not post links to other sites with forums (in your posts/signature/user title/location/etc) or send private messages to other users which contain links to other sites with forums, unless those users have specifically asked for a link.
- This does not include linking to sites that are relevant to a particular discussion.
Punishment: People who have signed up to UG specifically to advertise another site will receive a Permanent Ban. Users who have posted an advertising link in a post/signature/etc will be asked to remove it (you may receive a temporary Ban which will be lifted after you agree to remove the link from your signature/location/user title).

NO POSTING IN REPORTED THREADS
- Once a thread has been reported (using the report button underneath the first post of the thread), and someone has posted "*reported*" in the thread, you are no longer allowed to post in it.
- There is a 2-minute window in which people will not be punished for reporting and posting in a thread that has already been reported.
- Posting in a reported thread for any reason other than reporting it is unacceptable. If a thread has already been reported, just leave it alone and a moderator will get to it ASAP.
Punishment: Decided by the moderator. This usually results in a warning.

NO CONSPIRING TO SPAM OTHER FORUMS OR SOLICIT ILLEGAL ACTIONS
- You cannot use UG to plan an illegal action or plan the attack/spamming of another forum.
Punishment: Decided by the moderator. This may include a warning or ban.

NO HARASSMENT OF OTHER PEOPLE
- You cannot use UG as a vehicle for the harassment of another person or use UG to obtain anyone's email address, website, profile information, instant messenger ID or any other means of communication for the purposes of harrassment. This includes the sending of hateful emails, instant messages, private messages or comments to any UG user or staff member.
Punishment: Decided by the moderator. This may include a warning or ban.

NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT
- You may not share any copyrighted material or assist others in finding such illegal material on the forums or profiles, including copyrighted mp3 files, movie files and pirated software, for any reason. This includes linking people to torrents containing copyrighted material.
- You may not upload copyrighted mp3s to your UG profile.
Punishment: Decided by the moderator. This may include a warning or ban.

*** OTHER RULES ***

No double/triple posting
- This means no posting multiple times in a row in a thread. Please use the 'edit post' button wherever possible.
Punishment: Excessive double posting may result in a warning.

No stealing avatars
- Do not steal another user's custom avatar.
Punishment: Will usually result in your avatar being changed to the default Mandy Moore avatar.

No pointless bumping of threads
- Bumping means posting in an old thread to bring it back to the top of the first page.
- Don't bump threads for no reason. Threads should only be bumped if you actually have something to add to the topic.
Punishment: The thread may be closed or you may receive a warning.

No 'versus' threads
- This means no threads like 'Which is worse: Fall Out Boy or Panic! At The Disco' and 'Peanut butter or Jam?'. These threads nearly always incite really pointless arguments that we don't want in the Pit.
Punishment: The thread will be closed.

*** Please Note: UG is an English-speaking forum. You may not make posts in any other language without providing an English translation. ***

***WARNING***

Any memes that the moderators deem offensive, annoying or just plain stupid are against the rules. This includes images such as the 'LOL WUT' pear and the practice of 'Rick Rolling'. We suggest you do not spread memes like this across UG as you may receive warnings or bans at the mods discretion.

*************

If there are any questions regarding these rules, send a private message to one of the Pit moderators for clarification or ask in the New Members Q&A Forum - do not make a thread in The Pit about it.

*** THE WARNING/BAN SYSTEM ***

***PLEASE NOTE***

When you receive a warning or ban, an email is sent to the address associated with your UG account. Please keep these emails as a record of when you were warned/banned.

If your email address has changed since you created your account, please update this information as soon as possible (My Profile > Account Settings > Security Settings) or you will not receive notification of any warnings/bans you may receive. The moderators are not responsible should you fail to receive your notification emails, or if your email client automatically moves these emails into your Trash folder and they are deleted.

***************

The warning/ban system on UG operates as follows:

- Any warning received before you have received a ban stays active for 30 days.

- If you receive a new warning whilst a previous warning remains active, this will result in a ban.

- Your first ban lasts for 30 days.

Your record at this point would look like this:
~You receive warning #1.
~Warning #2 received within 30 days of Warning 1.
~Immediate 30 day ban for having 2 active warnings.

- Any warnings received after a 30 day ban has been served will stay active for 45 days.

- Receiving a new warning whilst a previous warning remains active will result in a 45 day ban.

Your record would now look like this:
~You receive Warning #1.
~Warning #2 received within 30 days of Warning #1.
~Immediate 30 day ban for having 2 active warnings.
~Your receive Warning #3.
~Warning #4 received within 45 days of Warning #3.
~Immediate 45 day ban for having 2 active warnings.

- Any warnings received after a 45 day ban has been served will stay active for 60 days.

- Receiving a new warning whilst a previous warning remains active will result in a 60 day ban.

~You receive Warning #5.
~Warning #6 received within 60 days of Warning #5.
~Immediate 60 day ban for having 2 active warnings.

- Any warnings received after a 60 day ban has been served will also stay active for 60 days.

- Receiving a new warning whilst a previous warning remains active will result in a permanent ban.

~You receive Warning #5.
~Warning #6 received within 60 days of Warning #5.
~Immediate 60 day ban for having 2 active warnings.
~You receive Warning #7.
~Warning #8 received within 60 days of Warning #7.
~Immediate permanent ban for 2 active warnings.

- As only one account is allowed per user, there is no coming back from a permanent ban.

***************

- Immediate bans (including permanent bans) can be given at any time at the mods' discretion, this means that 2 separate warnings do not need to be given for you to receive a ban.

- If you DO end up getting banned, you will lose access to all forums but one, The Forum of the Banned (FOTB). The FOTB is only to be used to discuss your ban with the moderators. You are unable to post in any threads besides your own, and only one thread is permitted per user. It is very important that you read the rules in the FOTB before posting or you may find that your ban is extended or made permanent.

- Your ban may be extended for many reasons including:
~Making a new account while banned.
~Spamming the FOTB.
~Abusing staff members in any way while banned.

- When your ban is extended, it means that when you have finished serving your current ban, you will be re-banned. For example, if you are currently serving your 30 day ban, we will wait until the 30 days are up, unban you momentarily, and then immediately give you your 45 day ban. If you are currently serving your 45 day ban, we will wait until the 45 days are up, unban you momentarily, and then immediately give you your 60 day ban, and so on. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you do not make any multiple accounts or cause trouble in the FOTB.

- It is also worthy of noting that any troublemakers in the FOTB may be 'shushed' or 'X2'd'. If you are annoying us to the point where we do not want to hear from you anymore, you will lose the ability to see and post in the FOTB for the duration of your ban. We suggest that you co-operate with the moderators and refrain from spam/flaming during your stay in the FOTB.

If there are any questions regarding this system, ask a moderator for clarification.

*** FAQ & IMPORTANT TIPS ***

What am I allowed to post in The Pit?
- The Pit is a general discussion forum. It is not a spam forum.
- Topics can be posted here that are not covered by the other forums. Any threads about guitar, bands or anything else that we have a specific forum for should be posted in the appropriate forum, not The Pit.
- If you’re not sure where your topic belongs, check the guide in this thread first.

I’m confused and need help using the forums or editing my profile, where should I ask for help?
- Regardless of when you joined UG, the New Members Q&A forum is the place for these kind of questions. It can be found right here.

Is there anything I should do before making a thread?
- Yes, there are a few things you should do. Firstly, use your common sense. Does your thread incite an interesting and positive discussion? If you’re just telling us what you ate for lunch – don’t bother, we don’t care.
- Use Google first. Many questions that are asked in The Pit would be answered much more quickly and accurately by searching on Google.
- Use the search function. Someone else has probably asked the exact same question or started a similar topic to the one you have in mind in the recent past and we don’t need 20 threads on the same topic.
- Only make a new thread if you could not find the answer to your question elsewhere, or if you're looking for opinions on something not covered by the other UG forums.

What should I do if my thread gets closed?
- Do not remake the thread, it has been closed for a reason.
- If a reason was not given for the closure of your thread and you can’t work it out for yourself, do not make a new thread asking why your other thread was closed. Please send a private message to a Pit moderator with a link to the closed thread and ask nicely why that thread would have been closed. We will get back to you as quickly as we can.

If I want to post about religion, politics or relationships do I have to post in the stickied threads?
- Yes. To keep the forum more organised, these threads must be used for the discussion of religion, politics and relationships. All other threads made on these topics will be closed.
- We also have several large threads dedicated to the discussion of sex, drugs, body modification, photography, etc. which you will easily find by using the search function (try using an appropriate keyword and restricting the search to threads with over 100 replies). These threads are not stickied but it is important that they are used for the discussion of these topics to prevent the forum being overrun with hundreds of threads on these subjects.

What behaviour is acceptable and not acceptable on UG?
- We expect everyone to behave in a manner that shows tolerance respect to others. Please think about what you are saying before you say it – there are people of all ages and varying backgrounds and social demographics on this site, and you should act accordingly.
- We will not tolerate any behaviour that we deem to be out of line, including racism and other discrimination. We would like UG to be a positive environment for all users.

By deleting my thread/warning me/banning me, aren’t you violating the First Amendment/my right to free speech?
- No. The First Amendment only guarantees that the US government will not suppress speech. We reserve the right to put any rules in place that we deem appropriate, and ban anyone from the forums/profiles at any time. You can certainly say what you like on the forums – but if it’s against our rules, don’t expect to be around very long after you’ve said it.

If you have any questions, please send a private message to a Pit moderator.
