There are so many songs with powerful lyrics in the world... Right now i have these in mind:

- Headlights from The Classic Crime
- Pet from A Perfect Circle
- Your body is a wonderland from John Mayer (my guilty pleasure xD) i think it's pretty good!

Rufus Wainwright - Hallalujah
and Guns N' Roses - November Rain

good choices, but i believe that was Leanord Cohen.

Big Empty - STP Scott is a great writer.
Riverman - Nick Drake
i need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah.

"Family Snapshot" by Peter Gabriel. When it comes down to it, Peter Gabriel is the man.

THE best song lyrics? uh... I dunno if it's possible to pick just one. but ben gibbard writes some pretty good stuff.

And it came to me then
That every plan is a tiny prayer to Father Time
As I stared at my shoes in the ICU
That reeked of piss and 409
And I rationed my breaths as I said to myself
That I'd already taken too much today
As each descending peak on the LCD
Took you a little farther away from me
Away from me

Amongst the vending machines and year-old magazines
In a place where we only say goodbye
It stung like a violent wind that our memories depend
On a faulty camera in our minds
But I knew that you were a truth
I would rather lose than to have never lain beside at all
And I looked around at all the eyes on the ground
As the TV entertained itself

'Cause there's no comfort in the waiting room
Just nervous faces bracing for bad news
Then the nurse comes around and everyone lifts their heads
But I'm thinking of what Sarah said
That love is watching someone die

So who's going to watch you die
So who's going to watch you die
So who's going to watch you die
Banging on a trash can
Drumming on a street light

Leonard Cohen actually.

I'd have to say "Wont Get Fooled Again" by the Who, purely for the line "meet the new boss, same as the old boss"

It isn't just Maynard. They write their songs together.

My uncle once said that Won't Get Fooled Again could be Iraq's theme song. Think about that next time you hear it.

Giving as Richard Hell is my favorite poet, his music aside, I'm gonna go ahead and say Richard Hell and the Voidoids. Blank Generation, Another World, That's All I Know Right Now and New Pleasure are some of my all time favorites.
But there are loads. Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Television, and Joy Division all have really excellent lyrics.

Black - Pearl Jam

I think this song is a huge contender:

Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me as her body once did.
All five horizons revolved around her soul
As the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn

Ooh, and all I taught her was everything
Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore
And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds
Of what was everything.
Oh, the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...

I take a walk outside
I'm surrounded by some kids at play
I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear?
Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin round my head
I'm spinning, oh, I'm spinning
How quick the sun can drop away

And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass
Of what was everything?
All the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...

All the love gone bad turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll be...

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life,
I know you'll be a sun in somebody else's sky, but why
Why, why can't it be, why can't it be mine

Love Minus Zero/No Limit - Dylan

My love she speaks like silence,
Without ideals or violence,
She doesn't have to say she's faithful,
Yet she's true, like ice, like fire.
People carry roses,
Make promises by the hours,
My love she laughs like the flowers,
Valentines can't buy her.

In the dime stores and bus stations,
People talk of situations,
Read books, repeat quotations,
Draw conclusions on the wall.
Some speak of the future,
My love she speaks softly,
She knows there's no success like failure
And that failure's no success at all.

The cloak and dagger dangles,
Madams light the candles.
In ceremonies of the horsemen,
Even the pawn must hold a grudge.
Statues made of match sticks,
Crumble into one another,
My love winks, she does not bother,
She knows too much to argue or to judge.

The bridge at midnight trembles,
The country doctor rambles,
Bankers' nieces seek perfection,
Expecting all the gifts that wise men bring.
The wind howls like a hammer,
The night blows cold and rainy,
My love she's like some raven
At my window with a broken wing.

Justin Hawkins/The Darkness - Knockers

Oh lord, I'm so bored
Living on my own
You're devilish and dirty
They say your pushing thirty
Well pushing thirty stone

Oh Christ, I'm enticed
I want you in my sack
Your potty-mouthed and brassy
You're anything but classy
I've just got to get you back

It's been a while,
Since I've seen that smile
But the old magic's still there

I just love what you've done with your hair...oh yeah!
I just love what you've done with your hair...oh yeah!
Oh!

Oh crumbs, I'm all thumbs
Lying here with you
You're beautiful and busty
But I'm a little rusty
I've forgotten what to do

It's been a while
Since I made you smile
But the old magic's still there

I just love what you've done with your hair...oh yeah!
I just love what you've done with your hair...oh yeah!
Oh yeah!

I love what you've done with your hair...oh yeah!
I really love what you've done with your hair...oh yeah!
I love what you've done with your hair...oh yeah!
I really love what you've done with your hair...oh yeah!
