Pain Of Salvation - Song For The Innocent
Dream Theater - Goodnight Kiss
Protest The Hero - Blindfolds Aside
Opeth - Windowpane
Meshuggah - Stengah
Dir en grey - MACABRE
The Devin Townsend Band - Triumph (solo played by Steve Vai)
Between The Buried And Me - Ants Of The Sky
Porcupine Tree - Arriving Somewhere But Not Here (second solo played by Mikael Åkerfeldt)

The list goes on. Anyone who says that this decade doesn't have enough good guitar solos is only kidding themselves. Just because they're not common on mainstream radio doesn't mean they don't exist. Dig a little deeper, dammit.

But if you absolutely require a mainstream song from this decade with a kickass guitar solo:

Coheed And Cambria - Welcome Home
Slipknot - Vermilion
Rush - The Main Monkey Business
Q: Favourite Pink Floyd song?
A: The one where they get wicked high and play Emin and A for an hour.

I'm a fan of Knights of Cydonia by Muse.

Could you please direct me to the timestamp of the guitar solo in the song? Last I checked, the song didn't have one.

Oh you must mean that keyboard melody.

Im guessing either the guitar part after the "no ones gonna take me alive" bit, or the live solo...

Hey - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Covered In Rain - John Mayer
She's Only 18 - RHCP
Animal Bar - RHCP

Mainly Chili ones are all that really get to me on an emotional level, and are my style, and don't sound like all the other solo's out there. John Mayer has acouple good ones also, I really like his live solo's better though.

To me, from 2000 on, imo, the guitar has gotten pretty stale. Omar Rodriguez has some good ones.

No it hasn't. Dig a little deeper than RHCP and John Mayer. There's still a lot of kickass guitar playing out there, even if shred's not your thing. Do yourself a favour and check out some Porcupine Tree or Pain Of Salvation.

Well, just because the guitar solo is unpopular, doesn't mean that good guitar work is hard to find.

I think the second solo in "The Final Cut" by Coheed & Cambria is pretty great....not all that technical, but it sounds awesome.

And "Dope Nose" by Weezer, just because that solo is a lot of fun to play.
California sunlight, sweet Calcutta rain, Honolulu star-bright, the song remains the same.

Well, just because the guitar solo is unpopular, doesn't mean that good guitar work is hard to find.

Not only that, but lack of guitar solos don't automatically mean lack of good guitar work. I mean, look at bands like The Fall Of Troy. Not a lot of stand-out solos in that band's work, but they have some of the craziest guitar lines I've ever heard. Especially considering the fact that the guitarist is usually singing over them too.

I'm getting really tired of that whole shallow "no guitar solos = bad" outlook most people have. A song can be great without a solo too. Look at "Lilium Cruentus" by Pain Of Salvation. It's one of the most well-constructed and beautiful prog-metal songs I've ever heard, and there's no guitar solo in the song.

Then we must have very different ideas of what constitutes a guitar solo.

heard them, not a big fan. I'm way more into old school guitarists.

I don't like how most guitarists play now-a-days. Its either not my style or been overdone.

Well, just because the guitar solo is unpopular, doesn't mean that good guitar work is hard to find.

Has no-one mentioned the solo in "Jambi" by Tool?

Or the solo(s) in "Ball & A Buscuit" by The White Stripes?

Probably not my favourite 00's solos, if I gave it some real thought, but they're certainly both very good.

I like the solo to "Invincible" by Muse, although the solo to New Born Live from Wembley Stadium (on the DVD, not the CD) is pretty sweet. But I still think for a Studio recording..."Invincible" by Muse.

Ball and a Biscuit by the White Stripes. And Kings of Leon had some good stuff on their first album. I really like the one on Dani California. And the one on Last Night by the Strokes. Then theres the Skin Deep album by Buddy Guy, and the Cream Reunion Live album.

Yep definitely Ball and a Biscuit - White Stripes... Its usually even greater live.
