Well so for the skool Talent Show, im thinking about playing an evolution of rock, starting with every decade pretty much so can someone help me pick songs to play for each decade, im thinking of, Doing a early blues song (probly a robert johnson song,) than 50's-00's, i am not doing the whole songs just main parts and solos

Heh, good idea.

Look for some hippie stuff like Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane for the 60s... Zeppelin is pretty representative of the 70s... Try something like Def Leppard for the 80s, maybe play some Van Halen or Guns n' Roses stuff too, although I don't think they really represent the decade as much... Nirvana and Pearl Jam for 90s, maybe something by Smashing Pumpkins too, like Cherub Rock, everyone likes them.... Then do some of the new Foo Fighters stuff (read: Pretender) or something like that for 00s.

EDIT:
So...

60s:
Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze
Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit
The Beatles - Day Tripper (it has a pretty recognizable riff compared to other Beatles songs)
70s:
Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
Led Zeppelin - Black Dog
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
80s:
Def Leppard - Photograph
Van Halen - Panama
Guns n' Roses- Sweet Child O' Mine
90s:
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Pearl Jam - Alive
Smashing Pumpkins - Cherub Rock
00s:
Foo Fighters - The Pretender

Provided there isn't another 00s song you like better, just play the whole song for The Pretender... everyone will know it.

I know a lot of these are painfully generic songs, but you want to play songs that people will know, otherwise it kind of defeats the purpose.

Epic post. Wish I could say more, but I don't know much about the subconscious and other psychological stuff.

I suggest you play something by Minor Threat, Black Flag, or The Dead Kennedys for '80s. Hardcore was very important. Those bands influenced everyone from Slayer to Fall Out Boy. And the looks you will get from people will be priceless.

I like this guy's list so far, but for present you should do something fresh, not just a modern re-hashing of old music (i.e. Jet, or The Pretender by the Foo Fighters) not to say that they're bad, just not modern.

something by radiohead maybe? or could look to the underground, Dredg is a fantastic band, the Mars volta could work too, if you have two guys you could do Circa survive if you tried hard enough.

EDIT: If you can play it, I reccomend something by The Fall Of Troy
They say good things come in small packages. You know what else comes in small packages? Unrelenting pain and horror.

doing less popular bands ruins the effect. the audience isn't going to react if they hear a song they've never heard before.
