Why does it seem that so many hardcore bands call themselves christians?

Like Norma Jean, Devil Wears Prada, Underoath, ect.

Lyrics man!
It's not always obvious, but if you look closely, especially if the lyrics talk about relationships, it probably means a relationship with god.

I can only think to get more fans????

Or they really are christians....

+1. I find lyrics in Christian Metalcore to be a lot deeper than just Metalcore. Sometimes the band members themselves are christian but don't actually portray it through their music. Emery is one thats like that. However you have bands like Oh Sleeper, Haste The Day, Destroy The Runner, Chasing Victory, Devil Wears Prada, ETC that if you just look at the lyrics you will understand.

As I Lay is a horrible christian metal group. Listen to Living Sacrifice.

Also, I don't think metalcore bands belong in the Hardcore section. I could be wrong though.

Eh, I don't mind metalcore. I can see how its not everyone but I hate it when people generalize and say all "insert genre here" sounds generic and boring. Not saying that you said that thats just kind of the way it comes off so pardon me if i misinterpreted it. Every genre has strong points and weak points. Unfortunately the weak ones get into the mainstream a lot. I've never listened to AILD but I do listen to DTR and I'm told they sound alike. True that there isn't much originality in metalcore (there is some check out Oh Sleeper. The guitarist does a lot of sweeps and has sort of a prog style) BUT when I listen to that music thats not really what I look for I just want something I can rock out to.

I was referring to the fact that bands like AILD, TDWP, KSE are clumped together with bands like Botch, Integrity, Prayer for Cleansing, etc. I like metalcore, hell my favorite band is metalcore (BTBAM) but I was just wondering when he said he listened to alot of metalcore, if he was referring to the bands that get thrown in here because the metal refuses to believe that they are modern metal rather than metalcore. I mean, compare the following.

It has to be said that Christianity in the States seems to be a warped version.

Doesn't really make sense to me. In 1970s America any kind of rock music was music of the devil, now we can have Christian death metal, ridiculous.

I heard Zao are a Christian. Norma Jean are obviously Christian, the lyrics just shout it out at you.

Zao are insanely right-wing, extremist Christians. Seriously, I left there show when the singer between songs said 'If you support a womens choice on abortion, you are evil and a murderer'.

Well some Christians still believe rock music in any form is bad.... You are correct though. People don't want to change their lifestyles for God anymore so they still listen to rock music...

Fair enough. I can't say I've deeply looked into their lyrics but it's probably worth checking out to see what they "preach".

But they now use the devil's music to transport their message.
To me, the church your parents go to is the way churches should be. America has an obsession with making everything a show and unfortunately that has seeped into religion.

Yeah I agree with you most churches in the U.S. allow rock music to be played the reason is Americans don't want to change their lifestyles.

A church isn't anything more than the people who attend. If it's a church consisting of conservative old people, then their church services will reflect that. If it's a church consisting of young liberal (insert stereotype)s, then their gatherings will reflect that also. And while I agree that churches have become very much so commercialized, I don't think there's any one set formula for a church or a church gathering.

What do you mean by 'lifestyles'? I don't think there's any causational relationship between the type of music one listens to and their ability to choose right over wrong.

Or someone please give me a swift kick to the nuts if this is getting too serious for the UG forums
