I'm looking into modding my first guitar. I'm pretty set on using my first guitar for the project, a plain black and white Squire Strat, and was wondering if anyone had modded a squire strat before and wanted to give me some pointers. My budget is about 300 usd and I play rock/hard rock/old metal.

Thanks for any tips.

Basically, build a new guitar from the existing body...

I would change the paint, maybe a cool burst or just a different color. You can also change the pickguard, try WDMusic.com or just google for pickguards. I would definately put in new pickups, a good humbucker in the bridge and 2 new single coils would be a big improvement over the stock pickups.

well, two good humbuckers will probably set him back about 150 USD. that's half of his budget right there.

Good job it's not your project eh?

I'd suggest new pickups (on a budget, go for guitar fetsih ones), a new nut, tuners and bridge, these are pretty much the essentials.
However new pots/switch is also a good idea and if you can, a new paintjob (not necersary).

Here we go.

There has been NUMEROUS strat mod threads on this board. You could EASILY look through the forum to see some mods.

What you could do:
-Neck-On switch. Check my thread here: https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=797118

-Replace the Nut (with a graptech nut)

-Take off the backplate.

-Reconfigure the Trem springs

-You could block the trem (better sustain)

-Change the Tone Capacitor HERE: http://www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/tonerange.php

-Assigning other pickups for each tone control, check:
http://www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/sw1.php
and http://www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/bridgetone.php

-Change pickups, like putting a Humbucker in the Bridge.

-Changing Volume/Tone potentiometers HERE: http://www.projectguitar.com/tut/potm.htm

-Treble Bleed Mod HERE: http://www.projectguitar.com/tut/potm.htm
and HERE: http://www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/volpass.php

-Sheild the cavity

-Phase switching HERE: http://www.treblebooster.com/brian_may_pickup_mod.htm

-Series/Paralell switch: http://www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/serpar.php AND http://www.treblebooster.com/brian_may_pickup_mod.htm

-Scallop the neck: http://www.projectguitar.com/tut/scal1.htm

-Killswitch

Even if you did all these mods, they would not come to a total of 300. Do these mods, then save up for a new guitar. For a humbucker, I suggest a Seymour Duncan Tb4, which is specially designed for guitars with Tremolos.

Good luck.
