hey all, just want some advice here
The other night I got a speeding ticket in North Carolina (where I live) going 51 in a 35. I was originally planning on getting a lawyer and try to get whatever the court wants from me reduced or even totally thrown out because this is my first offense and the court wants money more than justice, in reality. I have lots of friends who have used a lawyer to destroy a speeding ticket. I was going to do so without my parents knowing (forward my home mail to my college address, etc) but a lawyer's letter slipped through so they know all about it and they warned me heavily against going the lawyer route because they don't see how I could change anything about the ticket because it's rather straightforward that I was indeed speeding, and that if I lose, the court will turn aggressive on me for my trying to defend myself instead of humbling admitting that I was wrong and hand the court the belt while I bare my ass. So what have ya'll done with your speeding tickets and what do you think I should do?

i think you should just pay it

How much is it because if it's like 100 dollars or something it's really not worth getting a lawyer for

I don't care about fines and ****, I care about the insurance rates and the points on my license. If I can make this thing disappear, even a shadow of hope, I'm going to try. But is there adverse reactions by the court if I do try to fight the ticket, is what I'm asking.

I agree, otherwise you should be prepared to get ****ed by the long dick of the law.

you are an idiot for trying to get a lawyer, you will pay much more to them than your ticket ever would be. challenge the ticket, plead not-guilty and go to the magistrate and represent yourself. if you were polite when you got the ticket and you are presentable in court then you will likely not get any points and should be able to get your fine reduced. and there is always the of chance that the officer will not show up to the hearing and you will get no ticket at all.

would the ticket be in teh hundreds of dollars, but the lawer be in the thousands? i know here in ontario (canada) if you take it to court and teh cop doesn't show up (they never do anyways) it gets thrown out and you don't have to pay for the ticket, win win if you ask me, you get to go fast and not pay

Theres a time and place to go fast. How much was the ticket?

I seriously cant stand going balls out fast in residential areas. Sure, everyone burns out once in a while, but thats different.

no, there are no adverse consequences for fighting the ticket, do it on your own. I have gotten 4 tickets and fought them all. Only once did i actually get the points/fine that was on the ticket. two times i got no points and minimum fine and once the cop did not show up so i got nothing. it can only benefit you to go to the magistrate.

Seek advice b4 you do it. In my town most of the town is a 2hr parking zone. So i got a ticket for parking for longer than 2 hours but i was able to overturn it because the sign wasn't in a clear line of site. A bush was in the way. Sure, i knew it was a 2hr parking area but as long as you have some reason why the ticket is void they can't fine you.

So seek legal advice and find out if it really is worth fighting it. DO NOT take the "Its my first time" excuse. It won't work. You really need to find out some reason why it can't be proved that you were actually speeding. If you can't come up with anything than take the fine.

this is pretty stupid. anything from a lawyer will cost you at least double the amount of the ticket. if you fight it, just do it yourself... but you better have a damn good defense because "judges" in these cases are actually just cops themselves. you have to request a judge beforehand. the only time a lawyer is a good idea is if your license is being suspended or something. your first ticket... retarded. just pay it and take the online traffic school for like 30 bucks so that you dont get points on your license.

If you want it off your record, then get a diversion. Just pay the ticket, then go to the courthouse and ask for a diversion. it will be about the same price as the ticket itself, but a lot cheaper than a lawyer...

and whats with all the speeding haters? going a little over the limit is no big deal especially when there's nobody out. If I could go back I would have gotten a nice escort radar detector with my first car in high school, would have probably saved me about 500 dollars in the long run. Cops aren't looking our for anyones safety when they speed trap.. all they see is dollar signs... why else do they always camp out at the bottom of hills where speed changes from 50 to 30 suddenly? homos.

Maybe this is only Florida because everyone seems to be forgetting about traffic school... which takes the points off the ticket and costs only $30... and you can do it 5 times in your lifetime lol..

yeah, but it depends on the street. There is a 4 lane (each direction) street by my house thats literally bigger than our highway and about 1/3 as crowded most of the time. the speed limit is 40 and thats why cops are there the majority of the time. I'd say you could safely do 75 (the highways speed) there, but thats not what johnny law thinks.

dude, i went to challenge a ticket where a cop thought i did something i didn't, and when i waited for my turn to plead my case i watched three other people WITH LAWYERS get told off by a judge for fighting tickets, because they had no proof that they didn't do the crime, and there were no special circumstances.

if you just go to court, even with a lawyer, just to challenge a ticket because you think it'll get cut in half, you're sadly mistaken. the only thing that will sway a judge is if there's some misinterpretation involved on the officer's part, or if he has no proof of your speed or something and you can make up a good story.

Dude, 51 in a 35 zone? Just pay it and learn from it.

Speeding is just not cool, especially in a residential area. Admittedly I have broken the speed limit but that was on a motorway and I was doing 80 MPH to overtake a slow driver. I barely break the speed limit because I cant afford the tickets... Im only a student.

Just drive at the limit, you will still get to where you want to go.

just show up in court by yourself. if the cop does show up, just argue that it was your first offense, and that you learned your lesson, etc. they probably wont put any points on your license, but you still will have to pay some or all of the fine.

getting a lawyer wont help, especially if you really dont have any argument against the fact that you were speeding.

yea speeding itself doesn't gain you any real time getting to a destination unless you're going a long long way. you'd be really surprised if you did the math for the situation you're speeding in and looked at the amount of time saved.
