I can kinda mute the notes while sweeping downwards with my palm but muting notes while sweeping upwards baffles me . How do you guys do it?

Well, what I do is I just kinda brush my picking hand across the strings that I'm pulling off of in order to mute them.

as you're releasing the notes you mute them with your fretting hand, either with the fretting fingers or fingers not used for fretting at the moment or immediately after...

You can also supplement this with rolling the palm of your picking hand....
