I've been playing for almost two months now, just from tabs. I've learned solos and a bunch of chords. I like singing and playing, but I don't understand how the songs were written and how people understand what notes or chords work together. I played trumpet in middle school (i'm a high school senior now) so I guess I know how to read notes off of a scale, but I never really learned too much. I was thinking about buying this book

But then I also saw this one, and I wanted the free shipping so I threw in a capo, which I've wanted for a bit.

Would anyone recommend against any of these things? I'm mostly into rock and metal. Led zeppelin iron maiden and the beatles are the holy trinity for me, but who doesn't agree...

Thanks for any help.
