Dear Pit

In workshop class we got told to build... well something. soo i and some friends decided to build a ballista. The problem is that we dont know how we can make it powerful enough to make it shoot the arrow over a considerable distance.

Any suggestions is most appreciated.

And for you who dont know what an ballista is, it was an old greek/roman siege weapon that almost looks like an enlarged crossbow.

This may also be enlightening: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballista

Thank you on the forehand

EDIT : what i would imagine you need to do is use elastic bands with a rock. same principle.

Just make the bow out of less bendable material. That way after its bent back and loaded at has more force waiting to be released. Pretty simple, its just a bow and arrow turned side ways. Also, make sure your projectile is the right weight. It can't be too light or too heavy.

yea sounds good. but one thing we have a problem with is that we dont realy know how we should fire it. One possibility i pulling a really strickt rope of somekind all the way back and then have some kind of trigger mechanism to fire it but we dont know how succsessfull this will be.

Also the size of the thing is something we are speculating about but thats not the biggest problem.

Be careful though. If you take wood that is not all that bendable it might eventually snap. This is dangerous, not to say potentially deadly.

yew would be a good wood for the bow

Well i cant say that is very comforting, but thanks for the warning

I guess i'll have to ask my teacher, or alternatively(grammar?) try to build something else

Were they hot? If they were hot, I'm sure I could be descended from the Greeks
Go watch some videos on youtube, there's bound to be something describing the construction of a 1000BC siege weapon.

Other than what I've already said, the most I know about Ballistas is that they aren't as easy to dodge as catapults. I know this from playing Age of Empires.

Is that useful information?

Oh noes! I contributed, I was just trying to be sarcastic and mean and what do I get for it? THANKED, that's what
As for wood, when I was a kid, I made bows out of pine, flexible enough... think they cracked when they dried out too much though... but it's easy to get (just peel off the bark)
