Ok, I feel like a real noob asking this question:

For my birthday, I got a new tuner which is also a metronome.
I just want to know how to practice properly with it. I have already tried and screwed up horibally so I'm now turning to you guys for help.

Any advice etc will be much appriciated.

Thanks.

There are two major ways to practice with a metronome:

1 - Use it to get your beat division up to scratch: pick a slow speed (~60bpm) and pick one note per click, then pick two notes per beat then pick three, then four, then 6 then if you can manage it 8. Make sure you're always picking cleanly and you're not tensing your arm and all the notes are evenly spaced through the beat.

2 - Use it to learn licks/solos: Pick a phrase you want to learn and play it to the metronome at a speed where you can play it cleanly and learn it at that speed until you don't have to really concentrate on your fingers once you've learned it at that speed put the metronome up a bit (5bpm at most) and learn at this new speed. Rinse and repeat until you reach your target tempo.

Awesome. But what if it comes to playing one of my guitar pieces at the speed of say 100 and not all of the notes are straight 16th notes. Some are like 16th note, 16th note, 32nd note, dotted 16th note. How do I nail that one or will ith come with time as I practice what you already posted??

Well things like that will come with time but also if you get something like Guitar Pro or powertab (which is free) you can slow down solo and things and learn them that way. It will come with time though.

Okay.
I got guitar pro. had it for ages. use it every day.

I just need to practice with a metronome to practice my jazz stuff for school cause I play in the jazz band. Some jazz rythyms are a little tricky but I got them nailed, it's now just a matter of getting it in time with everything - if that makes any scence to you.
