So I rear ended a guy slightly. It wasn't a hard, major hit, it was more like a bump. You could see the mark my license plate thing made on his rear bumper, but thats about it.

After the hit, we got out and I tried to act as mature/professional as possible by making sure he was okay first and giving my plate numbers and stuff.

So, I have to tell my parents when they get home from work in 5 hours... how do you think they'll react?

Do people usually take things lightly if its a light bump like that? The guy I hit is kinda old, in his mid 50's or 60's. I'm hoping he won't make it a big deal and won't charge us for anything.

Note: If this thread seems pointless, I'll close it. I just felt an urge to get this out because I'm really worried about what is going to happen.

Update
So the guy called my house a few moments ago, and he seemed pretty nice. It appears that he called my dad already before I got home (and right before he left for work) and they're planning on scheduling a meeting to look at the damage.

So my dad knows about it already, but I don't know how he'll act towards me when he comes home in a few minutes.

The guy I hit is from minnesota (if that helps) and he was planning on going back there soon. he didn't seem to be too bitter about it because he laughed at some of my "jokes" like how I said that i hope what happened wouldn't affect his opinion on california drivers etc.

Update March 10 2008
So, the repair on his car was $574.78 :[ I thought it would only be $200 or so because i thought it was a pretty weak hit. My dad just gave him $600.00 instead of the $574 because personal checks take 72 hours to work out and the guy was leaving today.

I don't know why, but I still feel bad about the whole thing. The $600.00 came out of my wallet (I had $800.00 saved up originally), but I just feel cheated somehow. I mean, I know i was wrong and i hit the guy, but whenever my sister gets in an accident (She hit a new mercedes one time) they always let her off w/o any charges! And my brother just gets away with this kind of stuff. I'm always the one that has to tell my parents what happened and set everything right.

Your insurance rate will be set to "ass-rape" now.

I was hoping we could just talk to him and not get our insurance companies involved. He could just go to a body shop and fix the bump/scratch or w/e and we'd pay him for it.

No. I just got off work and I was really tired. The car ahead of me (The one i hit) speed up a bit and i thought we were moving so i went too. He braked really hard and i couldn't react fast enough.

Besides, I don't have a phone.

If that explanation made it seem like I'm trying make an excuse for the accident, I can assure you that I feel 100% guilty about it and I was totally wrong in that situation.

if he doesn't claim and if there isn't any major damage, then there isn't anything to worry about mate.
Just explain all the details to your parents, and they should be ok with it.

I wrote off a car last month and hid it from my parents for 3 days cos they were away, and they didn't kill me when they came back. So you'll be fine.

Oh, and that was exactly two weeks after passing my test.

Hes old, **** him over. Tell them it was his fault because the light was green and he stopped.

Naw but people dont take that seriously. I got rear ended (heh) once in december and i rear ended about three people around the winter (heh) but people just let it slide.

You're in America, don't be suprised.

Old people can be either really nice or really mean. Hopefully, he's one of the nice ones. Just tell him you're willing to pay him any damages (within reason) and apologize.

It was a minor bump. Don't feel guilty about anything. If your parents are mad, they're ridiculous.

I remember the first crash I got into. I went up to the other driver's window, he rolled it down, and I said "You had your blinker on!!" and he just shook his head, haha. I was dumb back then, very dumb.

Was the other guy pretty understanding about it? Things like that happen all the time and it shouldn't be a big deal unless he decides to make it one for whatever reason.

He seemed kinda irritated to be honest. I tried to act as responsible as possible (kinda funny how I say that after hitting his car) and I made it clear that I believed that I was totally wrong and he was right, and that he was okay and everything. I'm hoping that that attitude would maybe make him see things in a different light and might not press charges.

I mean, how many responsible teenagers are there. Most I know would just hit and run.

Good idea. You should really act like that even when it might hurt you, however.

meh, that's no big deal really. I did the same thing, some girl pulled halfway into an intersection and slammed on her breaks and I rear ended her while looking for cars. My parents were ok about it, and my dad is a freakin psycho sometimes so I wouldn't fret too badly, as long as you weren't drunk/high/speeding and no one got hurt your parents shouldn't flip out.

I don't drink at all. Well, I can't say that. I work at this restaurant downtown and I was making this Wild Mushroom Demi sauce which involves red wine, and this other sauce which involves white wine. Of course, I had to taste the sauces as they were being made, so I can't say I didn't drink. But it was only like, a spoonful combined mind you. And it wasn't straight wine, it was mixed into the other stuff.

And I wasn't speeding because, well, things would have been a lot worse if i did. It was at one of those left turn arrow things and i thought he was moving so i moved to. He just happened to brake a lot harder than i could.

And I don't do drugs.

Well, my parents might care because they might think I'm irresponsible and I might not be able to drive until i'm 18 :/

By the way. We aren't a rich family. Both of my parents work minimum wage jobs, so if the guy says his neck hurts and stuff and we have to cover their medical bill, we're ****ed. It shouldn't be the case though, because he said he was fine. But I'm worried about that too.
My parents work really hard to get by, and I feel really bad for it, because I will not be able to pay it off it its too big. But it might not be too big, because it was a small bump. Gah.

Yeah you did the right thing and I'm sure he appreciated it. People are gonna be a little irritated right after there car gets hit no matter how you act (unless you happen to be a hot blonde in a very revealing outfit or something ). Since it doesn't sound like there was much damage and he wasn't hurt or anything I wouldn't expect him to make much of it.
#36
well don't worry about the wine thing. And was the guy you hit flipping out and yelling? If not he probably won't sue you. And furthermore, was his car expensive? If not that means he probably won't care. Seriously, accidents are called accidents for a reason. It's not like you meant for it to happen. Chill out and show your parents you can handle the situation like a man, you'll get points for that for sure.

and yeah, you hit the guy, it's not like he's gonna be tinkled pink, of course he's gonna be irritated.

if the damage is under something like 500 bucks, no accident report has to be filed. his insurance should cover the damage. at least that's in Maine.

your parents should be fine. my dad was cool as a cucumber when i totalled my little car.

I was sooooo glad to be rid of that sh*tty little thing...even though i didn't mean to crash it
