what's the best overdrive/distortion for Jefferson Airplane or Styx?

I run an Epi SG through a Fender Frontman. I also have my dad's Ampeg Gemini G-12 from the late 60's (it's tube, not transistor).

An od won't work on your frontman, and a distortion pedal won't get you the sound you're looking for. I'd something like a tubescreamer through the ampeg, or a bad monkey if you're on a budget.
I don't give a shit if you listen to me or not

what do you mean it "WON"T WORK"?

like won't work PHYSICALLY?

or TONE-WISE it won't work?

Fulltone OCD (can do ANYTHING)

If you're going for cheap, then get the Digitech Bad Monkey. Rapes any Tubescreamer (TS9 or TS808) for $50.

I lub mine.

I also forgot to mention that I have that Boss OS-2 (or whatever it's called). It's that one where it can do OD/Distortion blended together. It's pretty neat on my dad's Gemini. I haven't tried it through myy Frontman yet. I need to get some more 9V batteries or better yet, the adapter.

If Boss don't work then Fulltone should, right?

Fulltone will do anything ya want it to.

I still can't recommend the Digitech enough, though.

Yeah, an OD is going to sound like a big load of asshole through a FM. Jack that Ampeg for real guitar tones...

are y'all saying "just" the FM would sound bad....

or any SS in general?

(and yes, I know that tube will always sound better than an SS, I'm not as dumb as I'm made out to be, contrary to popular belief)

well not always...cleans on some ss are amazing...but yes, an OD through a ss doesnt really do anything, i mean it does, but not what is supposed to...since there are no tubes to overdrive

SS amps are usually not as good. The FM is particularly bad. ODs don't work as well on any ss amp really.

SS in general don't tolerate OD pedals very well. Except maybe the Jazz Chorus. But even then, it won't sound as good as a tube with an OD...

It's okay, but it's overly expensive. I mean, for the price of that, you could have bought an OCD brand new.

I hope you're joking about the Bad Monkey.

It sucks HUGE D*CK

Not even comparable to the TS9 or 808

I hope you're joking. Tubescreamers are overpriced junk.

I challenge anybody who doesn't believe me to test them side by side. I'd take the Pepsi challenge between them any day.

Yeah me too

The BM's sound better to me and the tone control is more useful on it
