Freeamp 2.0 and Kristal. And you won't be able to just do that since your computer cannot take guitar signals that easily...invest in a DI box.

Reaper

Audacity

Mixcraft...free trial...I think you can try it for a long time however they only allow you to mix down your song to MP3 for 7 days...after that you need to buy in order to share your tunes however you can still mess with the program and record for yourself i think for free.

I like reaper and mixcraft however mixcraft is beginner freindly.

I think with a standard stock soundcard and plugging the guitar directly to it and then getting the 'amp' sound with a plug-in, using a DI box wouldn't make an appreciable difference.

Could I get some more talent in the monitors, please?

It's not for sound quality, it's because an electric guitar will hardly sound like anything when directly plugged in a computer (levels and impedance). Another alternative is plugging the guitar into a FX pedal and using that to connect to the computer.

Sorry.... it's been ages (like 8 years) since I've not had a mixer and proper interface. I seem to recall, though, back in the old days, plugging my bass directly into the line-level input of my Delta44 with no preamp and getting acceptable results. Maybe I've gone cloudy...
