australias brand spankin new prime minister, kevin rudd, has (instead of doing stuff that he promised to do like help prevent climate change) started a 53 million dollar campaign to stop underage binge drinking.

this campaign will include cutting funding from sports clubs that don't try to stop underage drinking among it's members (because, naturally, sports has EVERYTHING to do with underage drinking), and various tv, internet, and radio ads.

which, of course, won't change anything.

we already have people going around to high schools saying about how a bunch of students and some time drank however many bottles of vodka and one of them died. it definately is sad, but of all the lectures of that sort i've sat through, anyone that was a drinker before the lecture was still a drinker afterwards. + other people tried drinking as well.

all this campaign will do is make the government look good and make advertising companies (as well as whoever came up with the idea for the campaign) very rich.

ok. why both of them sucked.
howard: all of his bad policies were the ones that bob hawke came up with, but the government rejected.
rudd: he took all of howards good policies and then made the people promises they wanted to hear, whether they were needed or not.

but yes, stopping underage drinking is a pointless waste of money and time i reckon...he could use that money to bring the troops back, like he said he would.

Eh, underage drinking will never stop. If there is a law to prohibit something, there will be people who act against it.

And add campaigns and all of that shit won't stop a thing.

There are people (like myself) who like to drink who legally can't, and don't have major conditions or near death experiences who don't relate to the adds, so won't care.

Waste of money.

A lot of sports club do serve alcohol to minors, and yes, people have gone around o schools lecturing them of the dangers of drinking and, as you said, that hasn't worked, so of course they're going to try a different course of action. If they gave up they would just seem stupid and look as if they don't care.

A) Because he is trying to clear up binge-drinking does not mean he can't help stop climate change at the same time. I personally would see binge-drinking in Australia as just as bad if not a bigger problem if I lived there due to the massive ramifications it has.

B) Well where should he start then? If you've got a better idea, I'd like to hear it. I'm sorry, but it sounds to me like you're a teenager living in Australia that is just upset because him implementing his schemes are going to affect you and your friends going out and getting drunk. Am I right?

We have a winner! Seriously, what is the point in binge-drinking anyway? I prefer just to have a few beers with mates or my dad, much more enjoyable of you ask me.

Sports clubs actually do encourage drinking alot. My cricket club for example has beers in the clubhouse, while yes only for the 18+ many 15+ year olds are in the adult devision and listen to all the young mens stories about drinking and women etc. Seriously they do glorify it, I dont see how its a waste, this is a huge problem that needs to be adressed.

Rudd will NEVER get my vote. He didnt this time, and wont the next time around.

The Apology - Opens the government up to lawsuits (dont care what you say about the wording, but it is and will happen)

Kyoto - Will raise the annual energy bill of "struggling Australians" and in a time where interest rates are going through the roof, its not going to help.

Benefits - Reports that they're planning to cut Carers and Pensioners benefits. What will this pay for? The World Cup Bid? You CANT take the money away from these people, they do more good than anything, keeping people out of the system.

World Cup Bid - How many Millions will that cost? And its unlikely we'll get it. Why? Because the World Cup previous to that is a Southern Hemisphere one, FIFA will probabaly crack it about the viewing rights. Not to mention they will have to stop the AFL and NRL seasons.

He's trying too hard to be everybodies buddy. Promising money to our northern neighbours, but on the other hand slashing carers benefits (supposedly)

I like Rudd and still do but I have to say this decision is completley stupid. Yes underage drinking is a problem among the immature folk (I drink but not to be cool, for pleasure, and for **** sake responsibly) but putting that much money into it such a waste. However, directed at you complaing Rudd only does what the people want, a true leader of a country does what the majority of it's citizens want. But I don't think over 50% of Australians want 53 million dollars put into this failure of a camplaign.
