i think it has something to do with harmonics. pickups are usually placed close to harmonic points on a guitar and since its a 24 fret guitar, and neck pups are usually put where that 24th fret would be, it makes since to move it down a bit to the next harmonic point maybe?

^ that theory doesnt really work, since it would only be benificial in open positions, as soon as you fret a note all the harmonic positions of the guitar move.

Its actually really unique.

Cleans IMHO are phenomenal. It draws out the characteristics of both neck and bridge pups. Warm, yet bright and articulate, not too unlike a strat IMHO.

Dirty sounds are a little touch and go IMHO, but for the texturing that Carpenter does, it works very well at filling up a lot of space.
