my friend's band plays without a bass live. they think they sound good(i dont think they sound too bad), but they dont have a bassist. do you think having a bassist would make their sound better? also, if the guitarists have 100 and 50 watt amps, what is the loudest i would need for a bass amp?
Arbor A410 Bass
Dinosaur 20 Watt Bass Amp
Line 6 Spider III 75 Watt
Squier Bullet

Excuse me sir, have you been thinking tonight?

I don't really think bands are complete without bass. And the wattage depends on how loud you want to play.
#3
I don't know about the wattage, although I do know that they need a bassist. A band is **** without a bassist. They are the most important aspect of a band.

i would get atleast 3 times the highest wattage guitar amp (if they're solid state). in this case 300 watts. you need to make sure you have enough head room without pushing your amp to far.

they don't NEED a bassist but they deffinately add to the sound alot. Bands without them tend to sound a bit empty

Well this is coming from a bass player, but they don't NEED a bass player if they sound good as is. It may improve their sound, but there are plenty of bands out there sans bass that sound just fine. Granted most make up for it in some way, ex. Sleater Kinney using baritone guitars and Jack White using his whammy pedal.

As for the wattage, i remember hearing a good general rule is for the bass to be double the watt of the guitar amp but i could be wrong. I use a 220 watt amp myself and it seems to do just fine.

Yes, but I believe they had a keyboardist as well to balance it out.

not true, The Gories were an amazing band, no bass contained in their records.
#13
I think you should always have bass in a band, the white stripes can always sound good on records with White's whammy pedal, but live performances always sound really empty, and overall bad for most songs.

Genghis Tron.

And, yeah, to whoever said it above, the Doors never had a bassist.

Also, Blind Guardian doesn't have a permanent bass player. They have bass on the albums, but do not have an official bass player in their lineup./

It wouldn't sound as full, but it's perfectly manageable. My band has played gigs before without a bassist, and we were told we sounded pretty good.

Of course, we have a bassist now who's a motherfucking beast, so I'm excited

Divine Heresy doesn't have bass recordings on their entire album.
They were a three-piece during that process until they added Joe Payne as bassist.

Then again, Dino uses a 7-string in Drop C with his bass knob turned up quite high.

yeah but Divine Heresy suck, the only reason they don't have a bass player is because no one wanted to join their crappy band

This is the only band I've heard so far that works without base. But it works because they're so damn br00tal.

I'd say just get someone you guys know who plays guitar to grab a bass.

Bela Fleck & The Flecktones.

Technically Bela Fleck is playing guitar (banjo) but no actual 6/7/8/9+ string guitars are used by them.
