Pardon me if i sound stupid, but is there a difference between, say, 2/4 and 4/8? There are the same amount of notes on there, so if there is a difference, what is it?

I think it's the same, I don't think I've ever seen 4/8 though. Its usually 2/4 or 6/8 (unless you play more complex stuff)

2/4 is 2 beats a bar that are a 1/4 note (crotchet) length each. and 4/8 is 4 beats a bar and they are each are 1/8 note (quaver) long.
