Is there anyway to figure out what port is free?

Also, what does this error message mean? How do I fix it?

"Aborting the torrent as it could not connect to the tracker while not connected to any peers"

i have bitlord and when i got it ,it was already working fine and free i can get torrents easily from any torrent site

Can I get an answer please? Any way to figure out what port I should open? Have the same issue with utorrent.
