I did a search, and couldn't find anything on this.

What's the perfect tone for you?

Band?

Guitarist?

For me - Mattias "IA" Eklundhs tone. Really awesome, able to shred with, and able to do alot of funky stuff, because of the not over use of gain, but not underuse of it either

He is.

Not a surprise then, that my ultimate tone would be the lead tone on SDOIT.

Satch- PERFECT lead tone imo, cleans up nicely too

Larry LaLonde- Amazing tone, its what you get for running 3 different amps at the same time

Dicky Betts Lead tone- The perfect amount of "bite"

I've always been quite fond of Oli Herbert's tone.
Heads will roll. Throats will be slit. Blood will flow like springs of water.

imho the best and most identifiable tones are:

srv´s monstrous tone that he gets from a strat plugged into a low gain fender amp powered just a bit with a ts.(Song example: pride and joy)

claptons tone which he achieved with the bluesbreaker combo and his lp turned to 11 as well as his later overdriven strat tone(song examples:all your love and have you ever loved a woman)

slash tone he got on sweet child o mine or welcome to the jungle:classic lp marshall combo

gary moore: whether with his red strat or his worn peter green les paul:garys tone is singing and jsut overtones at the right places.(Listen to still got the blues or walking by myself)

rory gallaghers strat plus vox ac 30 (top boosted): any rory gallgher record

Oh, I love Brian May's tone also.
Since I already have an AC30-esque amp, and a switching system similar to his, I should aim to get a tone like his.

A really really really overdriven strat, on the boarder of too much, but just on the edge

Pat O'brien from Cannibal Corpse.

In the song 'Murder Worship', there's a section where they just do triplets, and the tone is absolutely crushing.

I love his sound on the 'Live Cannibalism' dvd!!!! anyone know which amp/effects he uses?

these days I listen alot to Nevermore and I think that Jeff Loomis has one of the coolest tones I've ever heard! both heavy bottom and nice high leads at the same time

Emppu's tone on 'Over the Hills And Far Away' by Nightwish (cover of Gary Moore) is about as close as i've heard to my 'perfect' tone. Either that or Jani's tone throughout most of the Silence and Winterheart's Guild albums (Sonata Arctica). The gain is nearly saturated, lots of treble, tight but loud bass, and enough mids to cut through. Emppu's tone is probably slightly the better of the two - doesn't have as much treble, but a better low end, and cuts through slightly more.

I've personally always loved David Gilmour's tone. It enhances his soaring lead guitar.

I also love Jason Becker's tone. Songs like 'Altitudes' really bring out the best in him.
#33
For a slightly overdriven tone with an edge of clean to it, Jimmy Page's tone from Achilles last stand

For pure cleans, I really like the intro tone for Welcome Home (Sanitarium) by Metallica.

For pure overdrive, Steve Vai's tone on For the Love of God

For distortion Randy Rhoads' tone on the Tribute live Album.

I love Chuck Schuldiner's and Shannon Hamm's(from Death) tone on The Sound Of Persaverence. Also, Dimebag's tone on Floods was actually lovely, unlike most of his stuff.

Santana has the best solo tone IMO.

Dang, forgot about Santana.
He has a great tone also.

I also like David Gilmour's tone.
But, i'm not sure if I'd use it. It fits his playing well though.
