....Ok so I cheated a bit, Its a kit build. But a sh!t kit at that. "Pre wired" electrics that fell to pieces in my hands, 2 pickup covers for the single pickup and I even had to drill my own holes for the pickguard!
So the plan is a creamy white lp with a slogan or symbol stencilled on the body and headstock, not sure on specifics but something political. Might buy a new P90 for it as I have little faith in the quality of the stock pup. Will start painting it tommorow morning if anyones interested

Pics!

The big red X in the neck pocket doesn't inspire confidence either...

make sure to seal that baby up before you paint and get a high quality laquer to finish it

Ive always looked at these kits, but ive never bought one.
How does the neck feel?Im considering one but am afraid of getting a totally crap neck.
Looking forward to it.

lol @ the phrase 'sh!t kit'.

... and those tuners.
imho, you'll be well off to get new ones, and never even install those in the first place.

Yeah I thought about it last night and I'll probably replace most of the hardware. The hardware for me were all just extras, I got a nice body and a nice neck for £85 and that I'm happy with

Cant decide what tuners to get!

The tuners on the bottom have nice looking keys, but I've always hated stamped frames.

Something like this might look nice:

Yeah they look quite classy Also realised they havnt given me a cover for the routing in the back for the pots.... never buy a kit guitar!

First primer coat went on using this setup.....

But after taking it down I realised how flawed it is :P Will be putting the rest of the coats on with the body on a cardboard box. Also not sure If I should paint the headstock or not. White headstock with some kind of logo sounds tempting.
#15
what color are you painting it?

i always though those kits from themusicking were saga ! they do explorers now and those violin bass things, i was thinking off getting the explorer and sorting the stupid curve out to make it like a gibson one, looking good up to now though mate paint it yellow, that would look awsome.

Yeah despite leaving a few pieces out of the kit and the general pickup/wiring crapness, after this I'm going to get the V and the sg. The paint I have is like a creamy off white but I am really tempted to go for a tv yellow finish

Its pissing It down today and I have to go argue with the girlfriend so I doubt there will be any progress. May put it all together for a little test fit If I get the time though
#18
Has anybody else noticed how far to the left the pickup routing is?

I'd lay everything out on the guitar just to make sure you can make it all fit together. You might need to fill the holes drilled for the bridge and redrill them or fill the pickup hole and re-rout that. If you gotta do that, you will want to do it before you have compleatly finished with the painting.
Not taking any online orders.

^ That might just be the angle of the photo's, it looks fine in person but i'll have a test fit today to make sure.

I know the pick guard looks naff but you get the rough idea......very rough
And no binding either, missed that

Might just be the photo... In the photo it looks like the left edge of the pickup routing lines up with the left edge of the mounting hole for the bridge. The right edge of the pickup routing looks like it lines up with the center of the right mounting hole for the bridge.

Nope corduroy you are correct, its just a tiny bit past the center of the right mounting hole.... fantastic

I'm not certain it's the pickup routing. It's hard to be sure from the photo, but I think the holes for the bridge are shifted.

Hey, very interesting. Never realised those kits were so cheap! I'm extremely tempted by the hollowbody tele ( http://www.themusicking.co.uk/build-your-own-electric-guitar-kit-semi-acoustic-telecaster-style ) kit..

Be prepared for pieces missing like mine, and possible problems with the routing
Still for that price you cant complain really.

Hows the neck they gave you? I'm very intruiged to see how your build turns out. £80 odd buck plus a bit on replacement tuners/bridge/pickups seems like quite a reasonable method of aquiring a new guitar!

I might be a bit late to get into this with you guys, but I was given a similar LP junior by a loving relative. Its a "Signature", (Chinese Roach Smasher!), and I am also having douts about the electronics and especially the hard ware. My Question to all of you is, do you think it would be worth it to upgrade this turkey, at least the cheezy bridge/tailpiece?.

Oh Well, If anyone ever does get back to this, I would appreciate hearing from you. I live in Alaska and you can just imagine what the price of an authentic gibson is up here!, This thing looks alright, but the frets need to be hammered and stoned. The tuners look nice, but they wobble in the peghead, and I can't keep the damn plank tuned!. I am mainly concerned with the bridge/tailpiece, the adjusters are just a piece of molded chrome!. I don't want to just throw it in the closet, it was a well intended gift. :stickpoke

Grover Rotomatics are my favorite tuners, personally.

i think i'm gonna go for one, either the Jackson or the Explorer. Still a bit worried about the quality of the hardware - but suppose i can upgrade that at any time? Plus, it looks like they have free shipping - bonus!

Have you seen some dude has done this Jackson....
#34
I'd go for it mate. The quality isnt great but like you said, cheaply replaced. The few pieces the kit was missing are being posted to me by The Music King, didnt ask for a replacement but they are sending them anyway!

Edit:
Ok so I put it all together, just to see what it would look like...and well, Im in love!

White is so sexy, even though its just primer.

That looks awesome!! Thing is, anything that you make yourself is kinda your baby!! Did it come with strings?

*Free shipping is this weekend only - i can put the extra £6 towards some nice paint!!
#36
Exactly, it as some minor imperfections that kinda make it more special It came with strings yeah, good luck on your build! Let me know how it turns out. Will be buying some paint maybe tommorow to do a final few coats and the headstock, then just a matter of clearcoat/lacuer
#37
Looks nice. Only thing I'd do if I were you is shape the headstock a bit. The top of it looks akward and hhuuuuuge.
And maybe we can fly away from here, surf on the debris of a broken scene...

Looks pretty cool, +1, the headstock does look kinda...odd
