I used to like Sum 41 about 2 years ago. Thought they were alright until Chuck came out.

The reason I hate their guts now is because I've been getting into the band Morning Glory. What a great band.

So I'm listening to the song We Just Don't Believe. I hear the beginning to it and I'm like, "I can swear I've heard this before." Then I realize the song No Reason by Sum 41 is a ****ing carbon copy of it.

I go and check the release dates on the two albums and Morning Glory's album came out a good year before Chuck.

So basically Sum 41 sucks dick for copying Morning Glory's song.

Any other punk songs out there that you guys know have been blatantly ripped off by mainstream bands?

HUGE EDIT: Lol now I feel like a fool. When I looked up the release dates I thought the song was on the original and not the reissue.

I therefore declare that I hate Morning Glory for copying Sum 41
What's up?

Ever think of that?

Yeah, there's probably more songs use like the D - A - B - G chord progression in whatever key than don't. It's nothing surprising.

We Just Don't Believe came out in 2007. No Reason was released in 2004. so No Reason was wrote a good 3 years before We Just Don't Believe.

it's entirely possible that two different band wrote the same generic punk song and weren't aware of each other.

+1 I'm not bashing the genre, I was a fan of Sum 41 before Chuck came out, (Thought they went to **** after this album) but honestly, in this genre it's Sooooo easy to write similar stuff and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it was just a coincidence.
#10
Normally I wouldn't care but it's so ****ing obvious. There's no mistaking it. Even the opening shouts are the same and sound the same.

And if you really believe Sum 41 thought of it first then that makes no sense. I can think of a song, but if I don't release it and someone else releases the exact same song, well then it's their song not mine.

just cause their from the same genre doesn't mean that they are aware of each other
and besides
how long has chuck been under mastering and stuff?
just cause it was released in 2004 doesnt mean it was initially recorded and written in 2004

Haha, I know Steve Jones ripped off an Abba song for Pretty Vacant. That's the other way around though.

And the riff from In the City by The Jam for Holidays in the Sun

morning glory > sum 41

usually they are just coincidences because how many chord progressions or drum beats can there actually be? but as for sum 41, they copied the verse of master of puppets in the song "still waiting" the exact same riff. that is unmistakable and definitely not a coincidence as the guitarist of sum 41 is heavily influenced by heavy metal, which metalhead hasn't heard of master of puppets?

And then Morning Glory used the same riff in "The Whole World is Watching".

The conversation just went full circle!!

EDIT: I've never heard the Morning Glory song in question, but I just listened to "No Reason" to refresh my memory, and the whole song definitely sounds like something Morning Glory would put out. In all honesty, Sum 41 and Morning Glory have more similarities than I previously realized.

I know this all just a clever plot to get me to listen to Sum 41. But I will not falter, can not fail, and do not fail victim to such thinly veiled plots.

The beginning of "No Pride" by Green Day is the same as "Born to Die" by Anti-Flag.

Eh, "Pieces" is kind of a rip off "The Scientist" as well. Along with "Underclass Hero" being a mash-up of their own song "Fat Lip" and the pre-chorus of Blink-182's "Feeling This".

and the chorus is "Subject To Change", but that was just a bonus track, so I guess it doesn't matter.

The first few seconds of "Game Of Pricks" by the Chinese Telephones sounds just like "No Way Out" by D Generation

There's a site about this. I don't agree with all of it, but there are some similarities between their songs and stuff from other bands.

morning glory > sum 41, even if they did "rip them off."
selling out is worse than ripping off in my opinion.
