Hey all, I'm having some trouble using imagery in my lyric writing. I keep tending to be too literal, I guess, in my writing. Got any suggestions?

Read lots of poetry and identify all the uses of imagery, imagery only, not metaphors or similes. You don't need to write them out or anything, but just looks how the pros do it (or even just read through S=L main forum). Identifying how others use imagery is key to unlocking it's secrets. It helps to understand when to use it and when not to. For instance, I don't want to know the weather unless it relates to the piece. I don't want to know that the sofa was stained with cigarette smoke unless it's vital.

Read, learn, and keep writing.
