Anyone been starting to think that solos have become pretty over-rated?
Especially the guitarists who think that everything else being played is just a 'warm-up' for the solo?

Or when you go to watch a band perform, and they're solo may kill but everything else is utter piss?

Some solos are good, some are bad.

Some solos are overrated others aren't.

Some bands are crap but have an amazing lead guitarist, others are amazing without an amazing lead guitarist and some are amazing with amazing lead guitarist.

So I suppose my answer is "It depends on the band in question"

I like solos, every song should have one IMO.

I like it in older music, the song would be great then halfway through there would be a wicked solo.

While I don't really enjoy his music, I agree with Zakk Wylde's "icing on the cake" quote. Guitarists shouldn't treat solos like they're the most important aspect of a song, unless you're in a shred band.

....Well, there is some truth to what you say. Solos alone are usually tasteless, a vehicle for promoting the pretentiousness and ego of the person playing...

However, when that same solo is played over a beautiful accompanying piece, the result is something that makes your spine tingle with chills.

All in all, solos alone are not enough, they need to be played over a song structure.

My 2 cents.

Solo`s are FAR from being overrated... unless your dragonforce

but the solo`s in Seasons in the abyss is what made me a slayer fan and hanger 18 by Megadeth is crazy with the solo`s

so no, solo`s KICK ASS!!!

It's good when they fit in. The shredding is overused a lot nowadays, so I tend to not do it (mainly cause I can't do it that well). Lots of metal soloing these days are getting pretty repetitive and boring.
I can honestly say I have really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like.

solos are great when they're done right. some songs shouldnt have a solo, some songs need a solo, you gotta make sure when you're writing a song that everything works, no one likes an unnessacary epic shred solo in every song

I think every song should have a solo IF a solo could be put in a song......Some songs just aren't right for a solo. The solo doesn't have to be insane shredding either, it just has to fit the song. (Examples are AC/DC, Nirvana)

I don't really like solos too much, in some cases they can sound good but most of the time they don't add to the song at all.

That's how I feel about vocals.

The solo isn't always the most important part of a song, and neither should it be. I like music with complex rhythms and solos, that way it's great the whole way through.

To answer your question though; no, they aren't over-rated. They're designed to show off what the guitarist (drummer, saxophonist, etc.) can do.

Solos are lame unless they're under 20 seconds long. Television does have some kickass solos though.

I like instrumental sections a lot better than just a guitar solo, Dream Theater style. Check out Metropolis Part 1, the Glass Prison, Octavarium, Erotomania, etc. However most Dream Theater songs are amazing even without the instrumental sections and solos. Some exceptions, for example, I would definately love the Glass Prison even if it didn't have the instrumental section, but Metropolis Part 1 would not be near as awesome without it.

EDIT: I didn't mention "Take the Time!" Best song ever.

Me too, vocals can just seem very unnecessary sometimes.

It just goes to show that a lot of songs abuse solos/vocals/etc just to show off.

It really really really depends. Bands like Pink Floyd, Megadeth, Soilwork, Ozzy/Sabbath, VH, Bodom, Maiden, etc. that have solos in most, if not all of their songs, and somehow, more than likely writing in a pentatonic every time, the solos never get old, work well and pound emotion into the song, and really just etch their sound that much more.

Then you got bands like Green Day, the White Stripes, or a your local guitar masturbatist in a local band, that has to make it an absolute necessity to play a stupid 20 second long solo over four notes on one string while occasionally hitting an open G sometimes or something

This is exactly why I have about 2 solos in all of my bands songs. And I guess I'd be called the lead guitarist.

Some songs need them, some songs don't. Some guitars can play a good solo in every one of their songs, some can't. Those who can't, shouldn't try, or practice until they can.

Best solo ever. And it's not guitar wankage either

Was that sarcastic? Probably the most boring "solo" I've heard. I'm not a found of total wankish solos, but two notes being played in the exactly same rhythm for 30 secs is well... silly.

ive gotten sick of solos where the only point seems to be to play as many notes as possible over some type of scale.

fast solos arent necessarily bad, but the quality of the notes is much much more important than the quantity of them

I was hoping someone would react like that

The reason it's so badass is because it's such a crappy solo. And when the rest of the stuff around was boring crap like Pink Floyd, I suppose it said a lot.

...

Listen to better music.

Hmm. With some songs I find that the solos are the most recognisable feature, and are more memorable than individual riffs. I sometimes don't really pay attention to a song, until the solo kicks in, or I sometimes only listen to a song JUST for the solo.
#39
Solos are good if they fit the song.

Some songs just don't need solos. Others profit from them.

At the moment, I'd love to hear some proper soloing in today's popular music. I haven't seen any decent guitar skills on TV since 2003.
