ok so i saved some money to buy a new amp... i can spend up to $900-950 NOT MORE... i play mostly metal and metalcore so high gain is needed but i dont mind buying an OD if the gain isnt that great... it can be a combo or a half stack... the reason i say half stack is because i might be playing live soon but if u think theres no good $900 half stack then ill just mic up a nice combo...

Marshall MG100's have good distortion.

If you've got nothing against ebay or craigslist, try a Peavey 6505. You could also try out a Peavey XXX too. Both would do metal fine.
Gear:
Gibson X-Plorer Studio Yellow
Orange Tiny Terror
Orange PPC-112 Cab (2 stacked - 1 open backed)
MXR Phase 90
Fulltone OCD

the 3 amps I would recommend-

Peavey 6505/5150. a standard in the metal industry. 120 watts, great for a band situation. not too sure on the "bedroom volume", something to consider if you're not in a band.

ENGL Fireball. comparable to the 6505 by many. brutal gain channel. but finding used ones isn't easy, and they're almost $1300 new. but they're 50 watts. a nice medium between bands and bedroom.

Mesa Single Recto. it can do it all. versatility, used units move well within your price range. and can get a more focused, tight overdrive with boost. 50 watts, again, a nice "in-between" wattage.

I'm in the market for a new amp head, and these are the three I'm in between as I'm right in your price range as well.

If I could grab an ENGL, I would. but they don't pop up often and usually go just as fast.
