any specific techniques? anything that gets you in the mood to start writing, or do you just sit and tinker?

I think of something and then play it.
Someones knowledge of guitar companies spelling determines what amps you can own. Really smart people can own things like Framus because they sound like they might be spelled with a "y" but they aren't.

Hum a nice melody in the shower or something, and then translate it to guitar.

I don't really write riffs around chord progressions, I write chord progressions around riffs, if that's what your asking. Think of something cool and just harmonize it so it makes sense.

I play mostly reggae so a lot of it is just writing a good bass riff and then doing some skanks over it, and adding some keyboards.

weed, shrooms, cocaine, ect... pretty much any drug inspires u

This too. I make it a point not to play a guitar while under the influence, but I spend a lot of time when I'm high thinking of music and writing stuff in my head.

Usually messing around. I wish I had looping pedal. So I could over-dub stuff.

there's an article in a Guitar World magazine where Mark Morton of Lamb of God talks about their method they call "Riff Farming." it's actually really good and i've came up with some unbelievable stuff using it. i'll see if i can find when it came out...
EDIT: it was the April 2008 issue with EVH and Wolfgang on the cover.
Now officially has too much gear to list

PM me if you want to know about my recording setup

i do the same thing (about chord progressions and riffs) and about the humming out a melody in the shower lol. and lol dont kno about the drugs but alcohol works well to inspire.

EDIT: what specific effects do you use? personally, i have an obsession with wah and not to much distortion. and flanging.

if i'm playing something clean, i'll always try a chorus between the guitar and amp, and maybe a phase.
if it's distorted, i'll try a chorus through the effects loop of the amp, which colours the sound differently.
i almost always have a delay on, even if it's very quiet
and wah or a chorus through the effects loop if i want to add a different texture to a solo
