hey guys, is it true that you are supposed to play the melodic minor scale differntly descending, or does it work either way? Please explain. Thanks!

Yes the melodic minor is a harmonic minor scale with a raised 6th on the way up and natural minor on the way down.

Ascending: Root-M2-m3-P4-P5-M6-M7-Root
Descending: Root-m7-m6-P5-P4-m3-M2-Root

so for the sake of simplicity, if it is played only on one string, it would go as follows:

0-2-3-5-7-9-11-12 (Ascending)
12-10-8-7-5-3-2-0 (Descending)

Well it depends on which type you want to do a Classical version changes going up and down and then the Jazz one stays the Melodic Minor descending and ascending
