i was sitting here and an idea came to me. you guys are all about customizing parts and guitars but one quesitons comes to mind about that. that is:

where are you getting the funding for making your projects?

i figured this would be an interesting thread for beginners or advanced builders who would like to know how to make their dream projects a reality. feel free to post whatever ideas or what you have done yourself to help out others so we can keep making awesome guitars.

p.s.
please no stupid comments like "from my parents" or anything of that nature. i would like this to be a serious thread

I'd imagine that most of the people who actively create and mod guitars have jobs, and this is something they do in their spare time with extra income.

I can't see anywhere else income would come from, unless you work for it.
Just like buying gear, people who mod guitars and such spend their extra money on upgrades.

true. that would be a good obvious starting answer to the question. i was hoping for more out there kind of answers like lets say someone does paid surveys. you know what i mean? interesting things like that.

Those are not interesting. They pay hardly anything, and are for lazy assholes or people who have too much time on their hands. Everyone here who works on and mods stuff either saves every dime they get, works a job, or both.

I get my money from pickguard sales. Thanks everyone who has purchased a pickguard!

I've got 4 guitars that are almost done, which i will sell and then use that money for more guitars! yay!

Ask your parents

but seriously, just find a work, that's the only way of making money

Mary Alice had a baby and he looked just like I did
We got married on a Monday and I been working ever since
Every week down at the Ford Plant but now they say they're shutting down
Goddamned Reagan in the White House and no one there gives a damn

Double Digit unemployment, TVA be shutting soon
While over there in Huntsville, They puttin' people on the moon

So I took to runnin' numbers for this man I used to know
And I sell a few narcotics and I sell a little blow
I ain't getting rich now but I'm gettin' more than by
It's really tough to make a living but a man just got to try

muikoma where u getting your pickguards from? and would selling guitar parts on here be more profitable than selling them on ebay?
#13
I've been interested in electricity since like first grade. Growing up, I had relatives who gave me old radios and tv's to putter with. In eighth grade, I got into ham radio, and met electronics geek adults who helped me out as well. Otherwise, I mowed lawns, had a paper route, did odd jobs for people, and got a job at fleet farm.

But maybe if you make some adult friends who are into the same kinds of things, they might help you out. People tend to be altruistic like that

yeah. idk i just need some idea of how to come up with some money to do my first project. not a whole lot of money persay. i want to get nice parts but not expensive parts for my first build. also im in college and its hard to go out and get a job because it affects my scholarships and grants. i just thought maybe there was something special you guys were doing to get the money to do all these guitar builds.

I make them, but they ain't reg'lar pickerds y'see, they's special

the trick to selling your stuff is: 1)making it good quality, 2)tell your custy absolutely everything about it, many pics is good 3)decide on your price and say this is my price, take it or leave it. it helps if you're doing something different from everyone else too (that's the tricky part)

My best buddy's dad owns a construction and remodeling company and I work odd jobs there. It also helps that some GFs don't feel the difference between $2 and $200.

you dating a stripper? I knew a guy who dated a stripper. He would always take a couple of her bills when she was sleeping.

The very amatuer mods I do come from old partsd, the £10 a week my dad gives me or the money I take to school that I don't spend (usually about £3 a day), I'm seeking a job at the mo cos I need to pay £500 back into the bank and buy a few guitars.

However guitar lessons would be a nice idea.

No. Buying is not taxable unless sold to you by a business in the same state. Selling is not either unless you do it as a business and post a profit in doing so.
#34
I got money for the parts on my first guitar from my parents (no kidding).. And the second guitar from my sister.

I have to get a damn job..
#35
o ok. so only if ur a business selling guitars makes it taxable. well thats good.
#36
wait taxes? people still pay taxes?

To answer the question about how people fund thier guitar projects..

Short answer..

However they can! (well legally of course!)

Selling pot.

Is he kidding? Well, put it in perspective. I live in Rochester Hills, surrounded by spoiled rich brats, right next to the high school (that I only graduated from last year). I wouldn't have any problem with customers.

I worked stocking shelves in the John Deere warehouse. Of coarse, I still didn't make much money cause I skipped so much work. And I wasn't interested in guitars at that time. So, I barely have enough cash left for my bass.

SOON, though! I will make all my money through the Ukelele trade

Or I could make Bass. Either works, but Ukes are cheaper.
