Vintage tuners like the ones with a "sliced" open post instead of a hole which you put the string thru?

Any string will work as long as you know how to string the guitar. The Fender Bullet thing is just to decrease the chance of the tremolo snapping the string from the ball-end, nothing more.

I assume the "vintage tuners" are gotoh tuners?
Just cut off some excess string, making sure you got some string extra and put the string into the little hole, and wind the string one or two rounds around the tuner, making sure it is tight. then start tightening it.
