What would be a good, cheap 4 string bass that would be good (and possibly easy) to customize?

I have a P-Bass now, but I am not sure if I should risk customizing it.

my Cruise i've been trying to sell for like 2 years

Same here with my Squier MB4. I'm down to $80, and no takers. If I wanted $50, like so many offer, I'd just pawn it.
Sincerely, Chad.

Would someone mind explaining what string-through is?

Strings go through the body.
Sincerely, Chad.

Go to pawn shops.

I bought my Epi LP for $250, a Behringer TU100 tuner for $20, Dunlop GCB95(?) Cry Baby for $40. All at pawn shops. All of my stuff was brand new though (A local music store went out of business lately and several pawn shops in the area got their stuff).

I saw a black Fender Jazz Master at one the other day for $179. You can almost always bargain down. Probably could have gotten that bass for $$125 - $150. The bridge\tailpiece was corroded badly and the upper horn (whatever its called) looked like someone hit it with a hammer repeatedly. But other than that it was in good shape just begging for a rebuild.

Many bass players who buy a sx (rondo) bass usually change the neck. I usually see the sx necks going anywhere from $45-60.
