I have a problem with my Peavey Backstage. When I turn it on, there is a strange humming noise, and the input is muted. What is even stranger is that when the volume knob is turned, the noise increases to 7, and then goes back down.

Any suggestions?

New amp?
Usually when SS amps are screwed, they're screwed.

No, I've had the amp for over a year. Just woke up this morning, wanting to play some scales and this happened

I mean, you'll probably have to get a new amp.
Too bad, because peavey's little SS practice amps are actually kind of nice.
Yeah, something is messed up. Not worth fixing (by a pro atleast). It's very hard to fix solidstate amps when something goes wrong, but i'd check if anything is messed up like the pots or stuff like that.
