Wow, this is kind of crazy. Basically, it's a device you wear around your neck and you think what you want to say and it translates the signals being sent to the vocal chords into speech. It only recognizes around 150 words and phrases right now but they are developing a phonemic system that would be able to say just about anything. I have a feeling we will be seeing a lot of "mind reader" type things being developed soon. I dunno if I'd want to use it though cuz I might say something bad by accident.

Anyways, what are all your thoughts on this?

Yeah, i saw something similar used for paralysed people who could turn on and change channel on their TVs.

Using their minds!!!

Oh that'd be fan****ingtastic. I often think about murdering people. Now they can hear me do it!

Useful for those who can't speak, but what's the point if you've got fully functioning vocal capabilities?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Maybe for super secret conversations?

What if you think of something private and then that thing blurts it out!?

I suppose if you attached it to some sort of radio device you could have silent conversations with someone who had the receiver.

This is fucking scary, how long's it gonna be until they do this wirelessly, and use it to monitor our thoughts.

I second this.
It all makes sense

It could then be used as a plantation device on criminals.

It would make politics more interesting if it made the bastards say what they were actually thinking.
Although it might also turn every speech in Parliament into "I hope this is over so I can go fiddle my expenses and employ my dead relatives as research assistants".

Yeah, I agree, but also this research could lead to simpler and maybe safer control of things that would be very complicated with todays technology. I dunno this is probably a bad example but like piloting airplanes maybe.

It's called development. We didn't invent the car the first time around. We had prototypes and we built off of those prototypes to create something better.

Who knows, if we grow off of this invention we'll be able to read a terrorists mind without using torture or harming anyone.

It would probably be good for military applications, where Marines or the Navy Seals could easily communicate with HQ or Squad members without alerting nearby enemies. Like said in the video, it could also help people who cannot speak, such as people with Lou Gehrig's disease.

I'm not usually one to wear the tin foil hat but yeah, mind reading is not something we need to invent.

EDIT: In order for it to work, the user would have to know the sounds to make in order to speak the certain word. Thus making it worthless for people who are deaf all their life.

it doesn't work like that. you have to physically say it for it to pick it up (by which i mean that you have to send the nerve signals to your vocal chords to speak for it to detect them, which would make you speak unless your vocal chords didn't work). the only way it would be able to speak something without you yourself making the sounds as well would be if there were something inhibiting your vocal chords.
my name is matt. you can call me that if you like.
