I've been having problems with the 81/85 set in my epi les paul for a couple of months now with the output being considerably weaker than originally. I've replaced the input jack and the toggle switch with no such luck. I've checked all the solder joints and wiring with the schematics on the EMG site, and they seem correct, considering I haven't changed any wiring since I had them installed. The 85 in the neck sounds normal, it's just the 81 in the bridge. Keep in mind it still has output, only around 1/3 of the 85's in terms of volume.

So what is wrong with the 81?

And yes, I've tried changing the battery with 4 different brands of 9v batteries, so that definitely isn't it.

I find it odd though. I haven't had them for more than 1 - 1.5 years until this started happening... Are they under any kind of warranty for this sort of thing?

Raise the pickups maybe

The thing is, I literally have altered nothing on this guitar, and yet the pickups sound much weaker. So I can't imagine raising them would actually solve the underlying problem.

Take it to a shop and get it checked out. Sounds bad though.

I don't really have the money to throw around at the moment to have a tech go through and check all the things I've checked already. Though if I did, I'd have done it a while ago. Besides, the shop here charges ridiculous prices - $75 for a standard setup, so I can imagine it would cost me a new pickup for him to tell me I need a new pickup.

.....i might be an idiot...but if they are active pups.....dont they need batteries? and therefore, if they are crapping out, why not check the battery?

I'd just get a new pickup.
As you said, to have a tech look at it, it'll cost so much that you could have gotten another pickup for it.
But, pawn it on ebay or something, and say it's broken, see who bites.

THey really don't. The winding can be destroyed by rust and corrosoin, but 2 year old coverd pickups...no. Check everything twice, then ebay the pups if nothing changes, and shop for new ones.

My main question is since they are no longer working correctly, after only a year and a half of moderate use, is there any kind of warranty on them? I still have the receipt for them.

Sorry, didn't see that. If i'm correct, EMG's plug in a 3- prong system, so I think that may be loose. That's all I can think of, so if that doesn't help, I don't know.
