So...I have the choice of taking a class in principal biotech next semester. Has anyone here taken a course in biotech and can give me a run-down on what topics are covered in a starting class? I know the applications of it, but what is actually learned?

Here's an easy experiment to decide if you like it or not.

1) Get a hand.
2) Get a metal pole.
3) Stick the hand on the pole.
4) Give people high-fives.
5) Profit.

At my uni biotech is taught in tandem with my course, molecular and cellular biology until honours year when biotech students MUST take the biotech options.

General topics covered:

Molecular methods and techniques

DNA, structure, function, associated enzymes and proteins, repair etc

Proteins, largely structure

Energy Metabolism

Cell Membranes

Plant Biology

Transcription

Cancer

and that's all I can think of right now.

for me, biotech was focused on forensics.

fingerprinting, law, blood analysis, blood splatter analysis, etc.

not as cool as it sounds, really.
