Ok, so if I were to play bass for a band and they are tuned a whole step down drop D:

C
G
C
F
A
D

could I tune a 5-string bass I have up so it basically is the same tuning? (Does that make sense?)

Meaning...

B --up to--> C
E --up to--> G
A --up to--> C
D --up to--> F
G --up to--> A

Or would that not be a good choice for the bass' neck and what not?

It is just a question; I'm hoping someone has the answer.

I also hope I don't sound like a complete idiot.

You'd need thinner strings if you were gonna do it.

Tbh, I wouldnt bother, you probably wont be chording using open strings.

It's a long way up - I wouldn't do that. Usually on bass when the guitarist is in drop C the best tuning is either C standard (half a step up on all strings from standard) or GCGCF or GCFBbDb. I prefer the first option - C standard.

Same reason guitarists use different tunings - you want different open notes and different notes grouped together on the fretboard.

Well the thing is I'm a guitarist, so I'm trying to learn to use my right hand;s fingers(freakin' hard! haha) and I'm just trying to find an easy way to switch the riffs I already know on guitar to bass, so...

Isn't there also the option of moving the low E string to where the B string is now on the 5-string bass and then adding a B string above the G string?

Or am I just stupid?
