Hi,

I'm customizing a Les Paul style guitar starting from an Epiphone Les Paul standard I bought on ebay (not sure what year). The original color was black. I was planning to use a stain or a translucide finish all over it so I would still be able see the wood grain. But to my big surprise, the neck is not made of mahogany like the body (see the attached picture). I'm guessing the neck is made of maple.

If I use a mahogany colored stain on my neck, will I be able to get it to look similar to natural color of the body ? Then I guess I would be able to use a translucide finish all over it.

What do yo think?

Well, according to Epiphone's website, the Les Paul Standard has a mahogany set-neck, just like real Gibson Les Pauls. But that's for the current model, I don't know what year is mine...

Here's the link to Epiphone's Les Paul page

"Epiphone

Most regular production models since ca. 1993. Many '80s and early '90s serial numbers may follow a similar scheme, but may not include a factory ID code.
FYYMMRRRR
F= Factory code (this can be 2 letters as well)
YY= year of manufacture (this can also be just 1 digit for '90s models)
MM= month of manufacture
R= ranking number (may be more or less digits, not necessarily indicative of total units produced)
Example - S02021234 was issued in Feb. 2002.

Another code used on some current Epiphone models
FYYMRRRR
F= Factory code
YY=Year of manufacture
M= This will be a letter code corresponding to the month (A=January, B=February, etc...)
RRRR= ranking number
Example - R03D0263 was issued in April 2003.

Epiphone Elite/Elitist models
FYSSSS
F= Factory Code (this code will be an "F" or "T")
Y= Year of manufacture (2 = 2002, 3 = 2003, etc.)
SSSS= Sequential Serial Number
Example - T41234 is a 2004 Elitist model. "

Is "light mahogany" and "white mahogany" the same thing?

Here's the description of white mahogany from www.stewmac.com :

Primavera is also known as "white mahogany," but lighter in weight than mahogany and with smaller pores. Resembles swamp ash somewhat, with a yellowish color if left unstained. Primavera is a stable wood that has been chosen for solidbodies by luthiers Michael Tobias and Tom Anderson, and was used by Gibson for Flying V reissue guitars in the '80s. 1-piece blank.

I'll try to get a close up picture of my neck today.
