Okay, first things first, I've been set a Composition Task in GCSE music (This counts as coursework).

I plan for my band to be able to play it.

The task involves:
-Bringing in a song that will influence your compostition and saying how it will etc.

-Writing the song, it can be of any genre (except classical I think). So; Jazz, Blues, Rock, Metal, Soul, RN'B... Pretty much anything. It should be at least 3 minutes long.

I'm not sure what genre I'm going to write for... Somewhere in the superly-massive wide range of 'Rock'.

Influences/The bands I constantly listen to:
-Stereophonics
-Muse
-The Enemy
-Arctic Monkeys
-Pink Floyd

-----

I plan to write for:
-Vocals
-Lead Guitar
-Rhythm Guitar
-Bass
-Drums

But also wouldn't mind including:
-Bb Trumpet (I play it)
-Bb Trombone (the lead guitarist in my band plays it)
-Keyboard (I'm very amature at it, but I'd do it at a push)

-----

Roles for each instrument:

Vocals - Well to sing, obviously, what about? Preferably about something spontanious, I'm not writing about my social life for GCSE if I can help it.

Lead Guitar - To play a riff for the chorus & verse (I'm not really sure, I think I need a bit of help on this bit)

Rhythm Guitar - Chord Progression

Bass - Plays the root of the chord

Drums - Keeps the beat

----

Trumpet - Solo somewhere in the piece, I think this would be a good contrast from the lead guitar constantly pounding out a riff.

Trombone - Not sure, maybe harmonise the Trumpet?

Keyboard - I think I might stick a tinkle in here or there. As you do...

So yeah... Any suggestions are welcome, particularly about the lead guitar part.

By the way, I have to use the programme; Sibelius 4 to compose it on. Aswell as beable to perform it.

THANKS

slack jack.

yeah, i was thinking indie/ska-ish, i couldn't write a prog. rock piece, simply because i'm not writing for an orchestra and everything else Pink Floyd like to use.

and i'll check out the Chicago song... somehow...

anything you can recommend for the lead guitar part?

i'm a noob, who doesn't have much experiance for writing for a band.

For GCSE composition the board are mostly looking to see that you can relate things diatonically. So your guitar riff should be derived from the progression you have composed.
The board aren't looking to see if you are writing the greatest piece of music they are hoping to see if you can relate the right notes in a melody to a chord progression and use various rhythms. Don't try to be too clever. Answer the question and fulfill the criteria.
