^some players do that, but the really high G tends to be prone to snapping

I believe that the lower 3 strings are given octave pairs (one higher) while the higher 3 strings are doubled.

E,A,D,G are octaves. b,e are doubled. some 12 strings need to be tuned down a half step though.

I was actually wondering just in general how you would play chords on a 12 string? Does it have any relationship whatsoever to how you play on the 6 string?

I.e. say you want to play an A (002220) on a 12 string, how would you do it? I can't think of how to make it work with only 4 fingers and a thumb to work with and 12 damn strings :p

Downtuning is optional. its a lot of stress to put on a neck so using a capo on a downtuned 12 string isnt unheard of. D standard sounds pretty sweet too . I generally tend to keep mine in DbGbDbGbBbDb though...

The strings are close enough together to use one finger for each string set , same as normal.

No, standard setup is 4 sets of octaves and 2 of the same, not 3 and 3.

And to the guy who mentioned D standard, I find Eb standard (all strings down a half step) more than enough to ease the additional tension. Mine plays just like a regular guitar.

I think you overestimate how far apart the strings are. The neck of a 12 string guitar is only marginally wider than a 6 string guitar.

The strings are paired close enough together for a single finger to cover two. You would play chords precisely the same way you would on a six string.
