If you have, you must remember the guitar improvisation in Pt 1: Someone Like Him.

I'm just curious about the construction of it. Is it improvised over a chord progression, or scale, or something else.

here is the guitar pro tab

It's only to most ****ing beautiful thing to come out of DT.

Anyhow, it's in F minor, played on a 12-string guitar. It wasn't an improvisation. It starts with Fminor arpeggios and then C#minor, then it goes into miscellaneous major/minor chord arpeggios, G#, G, F, G, C, and then im too lazy to transcribe the others but the principles the same.

I think all that was improvised was the 4 minutes of the continuum in the intro.

And yes that is a great song. If you want to sum up what Dream Theater is in one song, listen to all 24 minutes of Octavarium.

JR switches to a lap steel guitar half way through it.
