I know thats it bad to play fast if your pick is like slicing the string, but is it bad to go outward at an angle a bit if it helps you go faster? Or is it best to be straight completely?

i hold it pretty much at 90 degrees from the string, my guitar teacher was baffled when he saw that

Well your guitar teacher was wrong. The pick is supposed to be held at as close to 90 degrees as possible.

This is UG, we love Schecters and Ibanez and Jacksons, we hate Deans and BCR's, we hate Marshall MG's, and everyone needs a new amp.

90 going down, going back up i tend to angle it downwards
