So I have to write a poem for hw, and it has to be in iambic pentameter. i've always been confused about how to do this, so i just want to make sure i'm doing this write. I'm writing a poem about this local donut store (lol), and here are the first two lines:

Woke up this morning feeling great
I just want one thing on my plate

I'm pretty sure that's iambic pentameter. Can anyone confirm it?

Yes, that's the beginning of iambic pentameter.

No, you're not doing it right.

It's iambic pentametre, which means you need five feet, or ten syllables. But you have the right idea.
The will to neither strive nor cry,
The power to feel with others give.
Calm, calm me more; nor let me die
Before I have begun to live.

-Matthew Arnold

Arguments are to be avoided; they are always vulgar and often convincing.

no i think each line has to have 10 syllables in it. so like:

i woke up at seven feeling quite fine - 10 syllables

There is only one event on my mind - 10 syllables

if u get wat i mean
SEX!

Now I have your attention, witness the awesomeness that is my sig

Unfortunately your example isn't iambic.
The will to neither strive nor cry,
The power to feel with others give.
Calm, calm me more; nor let me die
Before I have begun to live.

Sorry, but it's not iambic.

I don't know what they're talking about, that is definitely iambic pentameter.

You don't know what you're talking about either. Does the prefix 'pent-' mean a single fucking thing to you?

Take it from a fucking literature student.
The will to neither strive nor cry,
The power to feel with others give.

I'd advise you to accept what a literature student says. Are you clueless as to what 'pent' means?

10 syllables, 5 stressed and 5 unstressed

Or if you wanted to be pedantic, masculine iambic pentameter has five stressed and five unstressed, feminine has five stressed and six unstressed

Because literature's allowed to break rules like that.
The will to neither strive nor cry,
The power to feel with others give.
Calm, calm me more; nor let me die
Before I have begun to live.

Oh crap, forgot to count the syllables. I was only going by rhythm.

Yes, you need the stressed/unstressed/stressed pattern, but you're two syllables short in your example.
