I've been looking for a good OD/boost for my Randall RG50TC recently and have come to some options that I find hard to decide between

  • Bad Monkey
  • TS-9
  • Krankshaft
  • Maxon OD-9
  • OD-808

I really want to tighten up my metal tone so keep that in mind as well. I'd prefer distortion tones a little more than clean. What are some of the differences for these?

I would say OD9. Best Tubescreamer I have played and it is true bypass. You could probably get by with a bad monkey if you want something cheaper. Also try a Fulltone OCD.

May I ask why you think it's the best?

I just thought it had the best tone out of all of them. The TS9 was a little harsh and the TS808 was overpriced and just a tiny better than the TS9. The OD9 has a smooth mid hump with a great sound. Its cheaper than the TS808 and has true bypass so it won't change your tone when it is off like the other Tubescreamers.

TS7 and mod it.
But, if you aren't handy with a soldering iron, go for the OD9.

Since the RG50TC is already a fairly high-gain amp, you wouldn't want a super high-gain OD as well, or your sound would be pure feedback.

So what? I wasted like 5 minutes watching DaddyTwoFoot's avatar.

Metalheads are the worst thing that ever happened to metal.

^Ya I don't need much more gain as much as I need to just tighten it up.

is the bad monkey or OD9 that high gain?

None of those are high gain and they're not supposed to be.

I personally liked the OD-808 over the OD-9. I'd advise you to try them out if you can instead of asking us, you already have a good list and have obviously done some homework, now go try them.

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.

^arg the only one I found in a store was a bad monkey and it was running through a clean ****ty amp so I couldn't get a feel for it's potential. I'm hoping when I go to Florida next week they have some good music stores that have those other ones. Does samash carry any of those?

I really like how the bad monkey has a low and high nob on it though and the fact that its dirt cheap kind of scares me but I've heard so many good things about it that I'm thinking about just getting it. If I don't like it, hey its better than spending $100 more and not liking that tone.

just go with the bad monkey and get yourself an eq pedal also, instead of buying like an maxon 0d 808

if you didn't have a budget i would have to go with the maxon od808 though
