Not that I can drum or anything but what do you think of a drummer who is the lead singer? I saw a band yesterday where this happened and they were awesome. Most people I know think it's a bad idea but I don't know. I think it's cool.

If you have someone that's really well coordinated I guess it might work.

Blasphemy. The drummer is to be ignored, and the singer is to be leered at. How can you do both to one person simultaneously?

Lots of bands do it ... as long as they practice and can do it well, I think it's a great idea.

My band's drummer is the lead vocalist, and he sings very good I think. It takes a lot of coordination. check out my link in my sig that says "Cade" for an example.

and, a local classic rock style band has the drummer/singer combo going on.

The lead singer in Death From Above 1979 is also the drummer, and he's pretty damn good.

Yeah but he's not the lead singer.

He sings every chorus, pre-chorus, sometimes bridge and interlude. He might not be the lead singer, but he does more than a fair share.

Sigged.

But yeah, I think that if the drummer could keep the beat going and sing lead, then he should. Only if the band doesn't have a vocalist in the first place.

He didn't sing and drum at the same time, he was Genesis' drummer then when he became their singer they got a new drummer.

As long as it sounds good it shouldn't matter.

he did drum and sing in the beginning

Proper.... use of the apostrophe? Three cheers and cookie to you.

Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater often sings along with choruses or has singing portions during songs. Bill Ward did the vocals for "It's Alright" while drumming.

+1 I love his drumming in Genesis.

Kiss (sings sometimes), The Eagles. Portnoy sings quite a fair bit of BG-vocals in Dream Theater.

This is true in live settings, although while not singing Phil would jump on drums and do a bit, makes a pretty interesting drum solo. However, in documentaries and in the "Abacab" video Phil can be seen drumming and singing at the same time, and while they are obviously miming to the studio track in the videos, in the documentaries he does quite well. As for me, I can sing "turn it on again" while drumming the part, which is in 13/8 time.
#36
also, the first new drummer genesis got after Phil began singing was none other than Bill Bruford, formerly of Yes.
